TOE M0BESM AM LUMBERTON, N. C, JUNE 6, 1920.; Noumber 26 VOL. LI DIVISION DEFEATED BYBIG MAJORITY VARSER IS NOMINATED FOR STATE SENATE BY MAJORITY OF annirr i son OVER PATTERSON, WHICH MEANS THAT ROBE SON WILL NOT BE DIVIDED POSED DIVISION WAS MAIN PAIGN LEWIS NOMINATED PARENTLY NOMINATED FOR TKICT OVER FOUR OPPONEN The movement to divide Robeson rounty was overwhelmingly defeated in the primary yesterday, Mr. L. R. Varser, on a straight-out anti-division ticket, winning the Democratic nomi nation for the. State Senate over Mr. CL B. Patterson of Maxton, leader of the division movement, by a ma jority of around 1,500. Returns from 23 oat of the 25 townships in the county Eive Varser 3,488 votes to 1,981 for Pattrson, a majority for Varser in these townshis of 1,507. Al fordsvlle and Shannon are the only two townships not heard from, and thought their votes will reduce Mr. Varstxs majority, they wfl not affect the result. llc&snu N. B. McArthur of Red Springs township and N. W. Jenkins of Fairmont, anti-divisron candidates for the Legislature, defeated Messrs. A. R McEachern of St. Pauls and D. W. Ballock of Rowland, division can. Hrfmimw by approximately the same majority as was given Mr. Varser. It was a hard-fought campaign and the iasoe was sharply drawn, over, shadowing everything else. The vic tory is all the more remarkable in view of the claims made by advocates of fivision of the sentiment in Robe son tm cat th,, county up into smaller counties, and the fact that the propo sition was to make two new coun ties, playing both ends against the middle. No disturbance has been reported except from Allenton, in Wi'shart, where a worker against division beat up a divisranist before the polls clos ed and perhaps alienated several votes, and from Buie, in Bvjrrfc Swamp, where some divisionists, sup posed to have been moved thereto by hc "old familiar juice," threatened to atorm the election" if Pat tens came out behind, but fortaaately there were enough sober Beads to avert any serious trouble. Lows Nominated for Sheriff. . "Sheriff It. E. Lewis was nominated over lfr. Sandy Barker of Lumber, tea by. a safe majority. Incomplete retains indicate that Lewis just about doubled Barker's vote. Fatter Apparently Nominated. . David H. Fuller seems to have been nominated for recorder of the Lum berten district over his four opponents. Wk only returns from Raft Swamp missins out of the seven townships that compose. th district, Mr. Fuller has a majority of 45 over all his op. sonants. It is not probable that Raft Swamp wul affect the result. Cards r Leads in Robeson. Eetanu from 19 of the 25 townships in the county indicate that Gardner leads Morrison and Page for Govrnor by same 150 votes, - with Morrison Godwin Probably in Lead. Incomplete retuns indicate . that Representative Godwin has a small i lead over Homer L. Lyon foT Con.! gress. though Lyon polled a large! vote. As this1 small issue goes to; m in doubt. The probabilities, however, are against this. The midnight returns indicate that Gardner wil lead Morrison from a thousand to two thousand. These re turns include the heavy vote the home counties of both candidates gave their sons in the tace. With 40 counties heard from, Mor rison "is leading in 21, Gardner in 13 and Page in 6. Cooper seems to be dis tinctly in fhe lead for the second place. Gulley and Hoke are leading for the places on the Supreme court bench with Stacy a close third in the votes. ," While' Mecklenburg county has not so tar reported as large a majority for Morrison as Cleveland did for Gardner, the votes in Johnson and Iredell wil easily offset the 1500. With the prediction coming out of Asheville that Morrison will get a ma jority in the Tenth district there .is every reason to believe that Manager Heriott Clarkson's predictions that Morrison will lead in the first pri.( mary is easily possible, Judge J. Crawford B.gs is not admitting that!
