THE ROBESONIAN, LUMBERTOW, NOETH CAROLINA 310NDAY, FEBRUART 28, if 21 PAGE THREE N. C. Has Highest Birth Rate In Union North Carolina Leads Entire United, ..States With Highest Birth Rate and Has One of Lowest Death Rates. v Raleigh, Feb. 22. North Carolina now leads the entire United States with the highest birth rate in the 1 r i . j i - . i noi union acccruing to statistics j.yr ,j.u , just compiled by the State Board of Health. At the same time this State has one of .the lowest death rates. Reports during the past year show a total 01 a,yoD Dirins in me omie . a rate of 32.8 per thousand. .The deaths totaled for the same period 33,228, a rate of 12.9 per thousand. These figures do not include the stillbirths, which amounted to 4,171! for the year. ' During 1920 every six minutes a new life was born into the world; every fifteen minutes, another life was snappfed off. That the births are so far in excess, of the deaths accounts for the, large increase in the population of the State during the last decade as shown by the last census figures, for the State has had little increase by reason of immigration. A Comparison for the past three years shows the following :1918 to tal births 76,175 or rate of 30.8, and total deaths 42411 or rate of 17.6; 1919 total births 69,791 or rate of 29.-. 3, and total deaths 30,114 or rate of 12.4. The verv hizh death, rate for 1918 was caused by the epidemic of influenza, and this probably also ac counts for the lessened rate of both births and deaths during the follow ing year of 1919. In 1920 the birth rate" went forward considerably while the d&th rate shows a difference of only five per hundred thousand. , North Carolina has been exceeded in birth rate heretofore only by Utah, rr : J- . - I lv J- 111 TRUSTEES OF UNIVERSITY ELECTED BY LEGISLATURE A HYPNOTIST IS A MAN WHO AT HOME HAS TO ROCK the: BABY kTO SLEEP I & s whicnn J?l"MLMra,te of 3L9. The board of Members of the board of trustee' of the university of North Carolina; were elected at a joint session of the General Assembly Thursday. Crusty bread such as the Italians make is splendid setting-up exercise for teeth and jaws. Pappy, mushy food makes mollycoddles of the bones and mus cles of the face and the box where we keep our brains, if we have any left. Bring up a milk tooth and away it .will go. But if it is treated kindly, it will stay until it is pushed out by its successor and hold the reserved seat for it. Otherwise the permanent teeth will come in crooked. Thumb-sucking," - mouth-breathing, premature loss of the baby teeth, and loss of the six-year molars are the most f reauent causes of malocclusion. " The jaws are out of shape, and the teeth, present and to come. Neither apparatus is impaired with serious results to the department of the in terior. Rubber comforters are ruinous to teeth, present and to come. Neither is the mouth the proper depository for fingers, pencils, money, pins, or odds and ends of juvenile valuables. Far too many children lead a "hand-to-mouth" existence. The four six-year molars ae the first permanent teeth, and they have to do all the work while the baby teeth are being shed. If they are lost through neglect, the jaw grows out of its proper position, and a perfectly good face is ruined. March Good Housekeeping. The moving picture censorship bill was given favorable report by com mittees of the Senate and House when the mater was argued before them last Wednesday night, the vote be ing 14 to 10 by the House committee and 7 to 5 by the Senate committee. It will be fought out on the floor. There was a warm debate before' the committees between Thomas Dixon gainst and Rev." Milton Barberrec tor of Christ church, Raleigh, Mrs. Henry Perry of Henderson, Mrs. G. C. Hook of Charlotte and Col. Bee Meekins of Elizabeth City for. As sembled for the hearing was the greatest crowd that ever squeezed in to the House hall, they say. The bill is fashioned after Pensylvania's cen- i sorship. ment Tom Bost writes in the Greens boro Daily Newst "He (Dixon) narrated five major incidents in the censorship of pictures in that state (Pennsylvania) and filed them with the committee. Among the stupendous pieces of asininity alleg ed by him was that committee's cen sorship of a picture which referred prenatally to babies and baby clothes, cradles and the like, the very ctn .vincing reason for this action being that children thought babies are R.
