Tliese poor misguided people have made a pub

better portion of the Northern,' people. The
leading newspapers of the city of 2ewYork
are denouncing their shameless conduct in un
measured terms. We find no pleasure in mak

people, for we know they will redound to jlheir
hopeless discomfiture sooner or later. We only
wish that ihey could see the danger they are
making for themselves by Uwse savag and brur
tal demonstrations. It may be too late before
they are aware of it, to nrake amends for past
follies. They can not begin too soon to retrace
their steps. Our interest in them does not
aiise from a selfiih desire that they should vote
for Greeley. We do not expect thw, and we
do not expect to isk them to do so ; but for their
own future good, we take the liberty to speak
a word or two of idvice : They should strive
to become acquainted with the political issues
of the country in order that they may vote in-
elligcntly. When they have become educated
and informed as to their civil and political du?
ties, they will not n?ed to ask how they shall
vote: until they are so educated and informed
they should seek and folWthe advice of the
best men of the country j or elso let politics
alone entirely. By all means let them cease to
heed the advice of their earju't -bag and scalar

H is better we think to make known the facts
a they are, as it is useless to attempt to dtgnia
them. We can not see the sense in trvinz to
make it appear that we have gained a victory
when the facta do not justify the attempt. If we
have gained a victory, all we have to say , a
few more such victories will ruin us. At the
same ratio of loss tw o years hence the Rads will
have the Legislature again. '
In view of these facts, it seems to na to be but
the part of wisdom fur in to cct to work now
in earnest to avert such a calamity to our State.
What were the cause that operated to bring
about the late disanter to the Conservative par
ty? Fraudulent voting, bribery, and intimida
tion are believed to be the causes of the unto
ward result. We believe all this, yet the ad
mission of the fact reflects no credit on the Con
servative party. If its members had been aa
thoroughly organized and as vigilant as they
should have been, it would have been impossi
ble for the Radical P.irty to have practiced
frauds upon them. This is the secret of onr

! JUDGE BLACK'S LETTER.
We publish to-day the" admirable letter of
Judge Black of Pennsylvania, and ask for it a
careful perusal. The letter presents the whole
question at issue in the Presidential campaign
in a truthful and logical manner.
Judge Black is one of the oldest and purest
ing tlieir pnsMona. 1 lie incendiary speeches of
Secretary l5out .ee!! calling for a ceaseless enn.i
ty between the m grot-s and the whites ; the dan
gerous and tiiicliristian letter of Gerrit Smith,
in which the fierce hatreds engendered by
slavery are invoked to make the South, in his
own words, a "hell of horrors" these are the
influences that are calculated to turn th negro
into a demon a:id to make the snllV rageextend
ed to the black race, in our love of justice and
equal rights, a ?ure to the nation. Li ft alone
by the politicians ; gradually enlightened and
educated up to the capacity of forming an in
telligent political judgment; taught that the
shackles of nlaery are broken forever; that
their lot in life must henceforth be carved out
by their own industry; that they have an equal
interest with all other citizens in the peace,
progress and prosperity of the nation, and that
they must henceforth live in harmony and trnt
with their white neighbors, the- negroes would
become a docile and useful people, and their
happiness ahd success in life would be insured.
But the teach irgs of the radical republican pol
iticians are cakulated to keep them still in ig- )
norance into watch slavery
nnd to bring untold evils on
warn the men vho are striving to excite the
fears and the passions of the negro race for their
own political emu that they are p.ayirg with
fire. i
