A CHALLENGE. . V-i . ' BT A tllQH-SCIIOQL OIBL. If you want n kiss, take, it. Tbe Is a jolly Saxon proverb, t That a uifio is balf iu heaven " ;WfcVo ha has a womau'a kiai; ' Bat there's danger. in delaying, ; And the sweetness may forsake it, 80 1 tell you, lashful lover, 1 . v;,,, - V M'jott want a kiss; why, take it, Never let another fellow - v Steal a march on you in this, Never let a laughing maiden . .See you eppilirjg for a kiss, ' There's a royal way to kissing, , - - And the jolly 6nea who take it f Have yoo a motto that is winning : If you want a kiss : why take it. -Any fool ptay face a woman. Any body wear a brown ; 1 . Bat a man mast win a woman - If he'd have her for his own, Would have 4h poldVn apple. v "- You tnust find the tree and shake it. '" If thethtnr is worth the having, . - fAud you. want a kis; wfty take it. w- . . . ' f l From the Rural Home. H ' SOMEBODY. Somebody's eyes have-grown dimmer, . Off in some quiet old home ; At morn when the evening stars glimmer Watching for come one to come Watching while heart grows - the sicker As day after day glides along. Watching while tears fall the thicker, - Choking the lullaby song. Somebody, wandering, over . Lambs far away from his own. Scents as of old the sweet clover That grows by the old door-stone; Longs to go-back and to mingle, As in the dim days of yore1. With those round the old cottage ingl Those who, alas ! are no more. 'Somebody's piayera are ascending ' Ever for dear ones far away. Prayers thafilia blessing attending May keep them from going astray : Prayers that float nearer and nearer ; The throne of theFather above, And, reaching the ear of the Hearer, - 'Are answered in infinite love, Somebody's life-work is ended Patient they wait now to go ; Long have they faithfully wended ' Toilsome paths here bejow. Shut np iu houses nine tenths of their - time, with either no exercise, of that which is of a limited irksome, -sameness, they are, as a consequence, unnaturally ale, soft and tender their blood is poor f organized anu watery ; iheir jnuscles email and flabby; and the force and fane, tions of their bodies, as a whole, run low in the scale of life., A spurious fullness ia often seen in the outline during girlhood, which usuallymt4t8 like enow under an April an whenever the endnrance is put to the test, as in performing the functions of a raoiher. The change in appearance from the maiden of one year to the mother of next is often so BtTtking and enuuring that it is difficult to believe that we are looking on the same person. The round pleasing shape ia prematurely displaced by a pinched angularity, and an untimely and unseemly appearance of nge. Travel erg from qiher countries, who have had extensive moans for observation and corn uariou, havo remarked o the grt at beamy of American women, and the early age at which Hs lost. Some have as cribed this to tho climate ; but more in telligent observers agree that it is a hot house, enervating mode of life. English ladies of rank, who, by the way are cele brated for keeping their beauty even to a ripe bid age ; think nothing of walking a half dozen, miles at a time ; while Ameri can ladles woul think such a thing "per fectly dreadful." If American women, so diintily and richly fed, wilUit iu dark - and sultry rooms the livelong day, they mustexpect to bloom too oon, to hasten through, this charming period at the longest in 'about ten years and for twenty-fire years after, have the grim satisfac lion of beiug thin, wrinkled, augular and - sallowr f "? '"T-- As KxxnAORDiNART MarnoD of Bringing a Drowned Mas to the Surface. -Stcffiuo Lauducci, an Italian gardener Vaj drowned (while-bathing In IWko Merced, last Stinday, says the Sarr FranciscoChronicle, of August 31. His body was not discovered until Wednes day, the two "men who searched for the corpse having failed to discover it by the oadinary ' means. Having 'heard that a loaf of fresh bread, into which quicksilver had been inserted, would drift about on the surface of the water, and finally sink over the dead body of Urn drowned, hev procured a large fresh - loaf and placed in ft four ounces of quicksilver. The loaf was thrown on the waters of Lake Merced. The bread immediately moved against the wind, WhicTi was blowing strong, and kept on till ..it reached a certain point. T,hp loaf then sioppedand suddenly sank, rand came to the surface again, and with it the dead body. .- The men who narrate tliis remarkable story are Viucinb Morino and Francisco de Luca. They are will known to our Italian population. Their story is substantiated by others . Pbillipids, who was sent from Athens to Sparta, is stated to have run 150 Ro man miles in two days. - October. 181 1, Mr. Rivington, a farmer near Dorchester, walked .560 miles in seven days ; and a still more remarkable feat was performed by Mr. Granville, a native of Shropshire,' who, in 1S06, walked 122 miles on the Hath road in twcnty-tiine hours and three-' quarters.
