What then? Shall matter, slide along aathey are, and hare been for these many days ? The street and pavements are growing worse year by year, the debt of the town nually increasing by accruing interest, the mar ket house is going to rack for the want of re pairs, the annual assessment of Uses is consum ed each year in paying interest on old claims u for what- these elaims are held no one seems, to know. Perhaps it is better that the same old slip shod style be continued. We were under the impression thai whatever is worth doing at all is worth doing well, and applying this rule to the management of the Town, we concluded that if it was worth governing at all it was worth gov ermng well. It may be that we are mistaken, and that the thin can't be done. The Straigth-out-Grant anti-Gree- Iey-Radical DemocraU have at last brought oat an electorul ticket in this State. Two or three extreme men calling themselves democrats got together at Charlotte few da ye go and did this thing, without consultation with the gen tlemen whoTi they appointed as electors. The Charlotte Democrat throws the following solid shot at these fellows : ' It would be more honest in the fellows who encouraged Ku Kluxing and belonged to the Klans.lo come square out for Grant instead of pretending to be for O'Corior. EFThe Hickory Tavern Eagle, of the 24th October, does one of our rcitizMi in justice, unintentionally, no doubt, but yet o such an extent that whtt apprised of it, it cannot hesitate to correct its state rooms, and withdraw words which con vey very erroneous conclusions. It says Mr. Wiley's "palatial residence" as it was informed, "cost about $30,000." The information exceeds the real cost a little over $20,000. The reference toiis school teaching is only true in respect to the. (act of his be ing a school teacher. It is entirely erro neous in every other statement, and in the natural inferences from the tenor of the remarks on that Ftthyct. Mr. W. wa theff posxesstid of double Hie amount hirt "palatial resUh'uee" cost hiuj, a fact of which i-he 'Eagle and his infoimer nvusi have, been ignorant. . That portion .f tht Eagle's remarks which suests the probability of impro per ofiki.il roiiduc, is wrong., Qf all the UeveiMie Collectors iu tiie 8i te, Mr. Wi ly, we have seen it stated, the only oik who has yet obtained a certificate ot final settlement with the D. parJnieirt at Washington. Fire Insurance Companies. A great many people, even business men, neglect or decline to insure their property, because they are persuaded it is useless ; that they will iiever get any return for losses in case of accident. This depends altogether on ihc Company you are in sured iu. "It fat estimated that there are not more than twenty thousand white Radical-. Judcef Merrimu received more than ninety-six thousand v,tes iu August. This give him a' majority of over seventy-five thousand of the white men. There fre less than eight thonsand negroes, by the aii of twenty thousand white men, ritfe the State. The whites have a majority of at least fi'tj thousand in North Carolina. From twenty-five to thirty thousand of these re mained at home on the 1st day of Aug. They: could have easily elected Judge Merrimon; All the evils of Radical misrule and corruption could have been prevented, if the white men had performed their duty. Th negroes control the politics of N. And just as little can the dispassionate observer fail to perceive that the ignorant multitude which is chains ed to the fortunes of the Republican party at the South, or which blindly follows the beck of the party leaders at the North, i duped, plundered, and cheated by the arts which mask injustice and wrongdoing un der the gnise ol patriotism. But it is no new thing that the tetainers of party should lake the catchwords of their lead ers as "pure gold," or that, in the idea of the great British 'moralist, they should mistake a piece of worn and faltered can vass for a full robe of clothing of gold Fortunately, the mistake is not always lasting, but disappears with the frenzy to which it is due.
