I.-! - -' - 4 i ir, f ' I- v'l 1 i ----- A CHEAT COUNTRY. The "Hon. Wm. T). Kelly, member of CotigroM from Pennsylvania, who made a tour of the South in 1867, apon Ma re- tarn home delivered a speech to his con stituents in Philadelphia, in which, speak ing of his journey, he used the following language ; "I saw tinting my trip a country tipon which the Almighty has with most lavish hand Mfstowcd his richest material gifta. It Is gorgedwith every mineral. J have acarcely blen in a State that does not nbonnd in coal, iron corPeraHl lead and have traveled over a region of country richly underlaid with gold-bearing quartz. Let me speak especially of North Caro lina because, as is eanallv true of Vir ginia, novcrtv has driven hundreds of thousands of her native citizens into exile. My friend," continues Mr. Kelly, 'North Carolina is the most beautiful and richest portion of God's earth upon which my vision or lcet nave over rosic-u. known tha she produce cotton, rice, in digo, tar, pitch, turpentine and superior timber. Yon know that her soil and climate are adapted to the cereals, wheat, corn, rye. buckwheat and oats. But you.pro bablydo not know tint State, long known ns the Kin Van Winkle- of the Union, trom which more than fclty thousand white people have lied to the tw;n States of In diana aud IUinoirt, in the lind of wine and honcy, the apple and peach, the fig and pomegranitc, all of which I ;iw proper ing in the open field and Under the most unless culture. Its native vines made the fortune of Longwoith who carried cuttings thence. The wine-producing vineyards pf Western Pennsylvania, around the base imd on the islands of Lake F.rie, and those Scattered through Missouri, are from the cuttings taken- from the native vines ol Korth Carolina the Catawba, the Lin coln, the Isabella ; and richer than all io the Scnppernong, of which, as it has not heen snecopsfully transplanted, Eastern North Carolina has the monopoly. There it grows spontaneously as a weed. Tin Woods and hill sides teem with the richest Honey-bearing flowers, and the bees invite yon to put up a rude box that they may reward your kindness with the sweetest treasure. There fa not a vegetable that We produce that will not thrive in North Carolina j and nnder these abounding stores of agricultural wealth, a belt, rang ing from forty to one hundred miles wide across tho entire State, is so richly under laid with gold that a person with a com mon frying pan may wash the sands of many of the rivulets and make from one to three dollars per day." From the St. Douis Democrat. A SIMPLE STORY. The Simple story of John Ileflfernan teaches us that honesty and patience are sure to be rewarded, more forcibly than that great moral lesson could be impress ed on our mmds by a dtdalical disc urfee John Heffernan was a poor boy when he entered the establishment of Messrs. Goldsticks & Moneybags, but he brought with him a certificate from Sunday School teacher, saying that he was an honest l id, who could learn more verses and forget them quicker than any other boy in the class. His employers were obliged to test his honesty in various ways, but he stood the test nobly. 1 i When Mr. Moneybags saw him pick up a pin from the floor he was sweeping, he thought that. John might be guilty o taking things, and dropped a ten cent hinplastor m the same place t but John honestly swept it out without noticing it, and brushed it into a corner, where he could pick it up at his leisure. Then M,r. Moneybags overpaid him his weekly stipend by $1, and waited to see what the boy would do. At the dead hour of night the Moneybags household was aroused by the furious ringing of tho bell. The old gentleman put on his dressing gown and descended to the door, where he found John Heffernan, with a tear in his eye and a dollar bill in his right hand. John declared (bat he no aid not rest in his vir tuous couch, after discovering the mistake, until It was rectified. 4Yhy didn't you keep it?" asked Mr Moneybags. would not have known that 1 had overpaid you." 'Keep it?" exclaimed John, "Uttje do you know of the precepts, -tha' were instilled into my youthful breast by my sainted grandmother. But I confess the temptation was a strong one. I was sav ing money to buy a Bible for my widowed mother, ai.d accumulated the sum of fif teen cents. With this dollar I could have completed the purchase, and 1 admit thai I looked at it with longing eyes. But honesty triumphed over temptation, and virtue is its own reward." "Kefrp the dollar for your honesty," aid (he benevolent old gentleman. "Buy your Bible aud be happy. I would ask you ta marry rr.y daughter, und would take you info partnership in the usual way, but it happens that my daughters r mil sons, aud yon must excuse me for the present." John; went home his heart swelling with the consciousness of having done his doty and made a dollar clear. The next day he invested that money in a chucka luck outfit of the benighted young heath en in the next alley. Young Heffernan was then promoted to a desk, and a five dollar bill was once placed temptingly within bis reach ; but John was secure in his honesty, and wasn't certain that the bill was a good one. Then he was put in charge of the back deposits, and his character for hon csty was established. One day when he was going to the bank, he looked at the ticket as usual and discovered that he was the bearer of o,UUU tn currency. He then knew that the time had come for honesty and pa tience to be rewarded, and ha stuffed the I ills into his pocket and took the first i . i . . .
