tub height of iMMWNOE,-J A cliurcli controversy liftB ng ap on Ward's Island, near this city, where our criminals and poor arc largely gather ed A building has been put up at the public expense fo be ieJ w place for religions service ; the larger part of the people of course aro Human Ouiholics, and the priest claims the exclusive use of the house, although the Piotestauts, who have souls as well as Others, want the place for a eervice ou Sunday. A Protes tant gentleman having asserted this right, the priest who signs himself P. Prachen rky, S. J., Catholic Chaplain, Writes to the Herald aud settles the question iu these few but emphatic words : i Will the reverend objector inform ma what he has to demand that meney be longing to the State shall be used to build .. luhorimoln n St:ite rrround to be occu- Died bv bis sect ? The Catholic (Jlimoh is not a sect. She and is the Church of Christ from the time of Christ aud His apostles." Tliis is a distinct avowaVof the dcctHn? acted upon by tbeHomnn Catholic party in this country daring all the controversy about support of schools and. charities by the State. The ouini'ous sentiment was never so clearly put into words be fore, bnt we have it now publicly kvowed, aud wo copy it especially for the cousid eration of legislators, and commissioners. It is now held by this Roman Catholic authority that the State has no right to build a church for a sect; that Protestants are a sect and therefore cannot have a church built by the State ; but Roman Catholics being a church and not a sect, may have churches built for their use by the Stale. Well, it is something to know that your euemy is at, and here we have it ou at last. "No sectarian appropiations' means none to Potestants, but Romanists, not being sectarian, may have all they want ! ! ! In times past, the Romanists have secured these gilts from the Stale by the power of -their votes at elections, and political parties have given them money to secure or to pay tor these votes. I '.ut wu have now reached that stage in tho war for religions liberty and equal civil rights that Roman Catholics feet istrung enough to throw off di.-gttise and assert boldly their right to public money ou the ground that they are not sectarian, but the universal church, above all sects und States, entitled lo receive the tribute of the State wbjeh tribute is paid by tux ing the sects. 8ee how it works : we 1L.1 in ,L:. Mow V tiri: J" UIIM Uhil III IIIU I'l.ii VI VJ nine-tenths of the taxes are paid by Pro testunts. The Romish priest says, "You Protestants being sectarian have no right to public money ; we Romauists are not a sect, and therefore may have a church built by tho State.' B ;t the Protestants pay nine-tenths of the money, and it goes into the Rotniidi Church When it is ex pendedupon their charities. So the priests theory amounts to this, 'You Protestants shall pay nine-tenths of all the money we Romauists can get of the State for our churches.' And we Protestants are just simple ruough to submit to it aud pay tho money without a murmur. As to the specific case before Us, the Ward's Island chapel, it is evidently pro per that such a building should be put up, and kept iu repair by tho proper authori for the religious use of the people on the l.-land. No one sect wants it all the time, 11 : a i j J uur an uiua uu ouim.tv. aiiu cwuuu mi decency would secure an equitable ar rangement by which Protestant aud others may uao ft. IV. Y. Observer .
