mm m . i , TO DESTROY TOBACCO WORMS. The tobacco worm wA only in tests the plant from which its name is derived, but is very destructive to, the potato and to mato plant. The labor of worming tobacco is best known by those who cul tivate the plant, but our maket gardeners and otherr who grow the tomito exten sively, seldom made it a business to kill the worms but suffer them to prey on their plants and arrive at maturity, and con tinue to propagate and multiply their species ad infinitum. We have somewhere seen it stated that a preparation ot cobalt, a poisonous mineral, often used to destroy house fiies, may be employed to kill the large moth or miller, t ho parent of the potato or tobacco worm- One of these a. m. female ii.srcts called "horn blower," will lay several hundred eggs, each becoming a destructive worm, and repulsive looking insects may be prevented by killing the parent. These huge millers are seen jut in the dusk of the evening flying around sweet secnted honeysuckle, the James town weed, and any other large honey- producuig blossoms, gathering Honey jus: like war humming bud, winch it very much resembles while on the wing. The cobalt is prepared as follows ; It should be pulverised in a mortar perfectly fine, and three or tour ounces ot this may le place in a pint bottle, to which should i S I 1 ' . -SI ' .i J . . oe auuea a mixture oi noney aim wmer ; two or three drops of liquid is to be piac ed in toe freshly opened blossoms of the Jamestown weed, as the most convenient This bcine repeated occasionally in the afternoon, during the season of the moth every one which partakes of the substance readily dies. The Jamestown weed at tracts the fly by its large bell-shaped flowers, and it is a plant the with, delights X teed on. A BEAUTIFUL YOUNG LADY IN A MAUKET CART. A Danville correspondent of the Rich aaond Whig writes: Among the local incidents of the past week was the appearance of a beautiful young lady from North Carolina seated in a wagon in the market space, with chickens and butter for sale. Her beaaty excelled any seen in these parts for a long time. She was accompanied by her mother and little brother, and was modest in appearance, with a countenanoe that indicated a good and true heart within. Her beauty attraetad many of our yonng men to the wagon in w Inch she was seated. One of them became so enamored with her that' he actually bought all of her marketing and sold it for the same he paid for it, considering that the sight of her bad amply repaid him for any loss he might sustain. This beautiful young lady did not wear a two story chignon, with the little appendage on the top of the head called a "bonnet" nor was she attired in twentytwo yards of drygoods doubled and trebled with the usual ''tuck-up" behind, but she wore a plain and tidy dress, consisting of about eight yards oi calico, made in the plain and neat style of the olden time. Lucky will be the man who succeeds in captivating such a young lady for a wife. , THE PIOUS GENERAL HOWARD On Tuesday last the saintly Howard, feeling boidc qualms ot tear, betook him self to the office! ot the Inspector Genera) of the Army at the War Department a. "Washington, and meekly leqnested of an officer attached to that branch of tin service information as to what charges In could be tried upon should the Depart ment aee fit to order a court rnirlial. U was informed that he could be tried foi neglect of duty hi allowing his subordi nates to misapply money belonging to the Freed man', liuroan or under the 39th article of war for embezzlement. In the conversation which insued with the office! upon bis troubles, it was suggested to him that he had the privilege of demanding a court of inquiry, or, inasmuch as tin charges had become a matter of public notoriety, it might be to his advantage to request an investigation by a militai) court. Howard replied that with the fee! ing entertained towards him by mairr officers of the army, he did not think he could get justice, and hence thus far had declined to ask for a trial by such a tribunal. HOW "GREENBACKS" PAPER IS MADE. All the paper for the money issued" by the Government i munufaetnred on a 62 inch Foudiinier rnachiue, at the Glenn Mill?, uear West Chester Pa , Short pieces of red silk are mixed with the pulp in the engine, and the finished stuff is conducted to the wire withont passing through any screens, which might retain the silk threads. By an arrangement above the wir cloth, a shower of short pieces of fine blue silk thread is dropped in streaks upon the paper while it is: being formed. The upper side, on which the blue silk is dropped, is the one used for t lie face of the notes, aud, from the man ner in which the threads are applied, must show them more distinctly than the lower or reverse side, although they are embed ded deeply enough to remain fixed. The mill is guatded by officials night and day tp prevent the abstraction of auy paper. SciENTIFC AMERICAX. Crop Prospects in Europe. The crop reports from all parts of Europe are more satisfactory, and it is now confident ly anticipated that the deficiency in Eng land and other countries will be less than was regarded as probable a month or six weeks ago. In England, at the very best, however, the wheat harvest, not withstand ing the improved weather, must fall con- ciderably below the reduced average of last year, with the result of rendering KngUnd still more dependent on foreign c untrfas for food supplies. Yet it is a rtinarkablej act, and one which illustrates the beneficial operation of the natural laws of trade when not inteifered with by legislation, that the arrivals of foreign grain are so regular and large that the price of wheat is now somewhat lower in England than" it wis a year ago. The Lincoln Progress says : On Tues day evening wbont dark, a carload of rags belonging to William & R Tiddy, caught on fire by spontaneous combustion and burned both rags and car. The loss to Messrs. Tiddy is about $500, and about $150 to the Railroad Company.- .
