Walking in the vicinity of the city a few days ago, our path led under a wLite oak. The shade was so large and pleasant. Curiosi- ty led us to pleasure the spread of the branches, and; we found that they covered an area of 90; feet in diameter. If any readcf should desire to sec how large a plat of ground a circle of 90 feet in diame ter is, let him get a cord 45 feet long; tie one end to a stake driven in the ground, and the other to a stick to be carried in his hand ; and let him walk around the fixed stake with the cord stretched, and scribe the circle on the ground. But the spread of this tree is small when compared with that of the Santa Barbora Grape Vine, in California, which is claimed to be the largest in the world. It covers an acre of ground. Nevertheless if there is anywhite oak tree hereabouts with a wider spread than ours, we would be glad to hear of it. 6rst get here") to bathe without assistance. After dashing about in the water for a considerable time, the gentleman above mentioned threw himself across the rope to rest, and while there touching nothing, nave the rope and water, he fell asleep, and remained, in that position tor one and a half hours. . When he awoke, he seem ed very, much frightened, and came charging out of the Water, puffing and blowing something after the style of a Mississippi Steamboat, and now declares his rheumatic pains have left him. When he came here two months ago he could scarcely; put bis feet on the ground, but now he is able to attend to almost any kind of business, and praises the lovely waters that washed bis pains away. Editors df the Watchman: Soon after the late war, being so situated that I had considerable leisure, I concluded to collect all the materials in my reach, beaming on the history of Salisbury, and to put thep in a form to secure their preserva tion. Though not favorably located for the work, I am sure my undertaking was not entire ly unfruitful, as to sescuring important and in teresting matter from threatened oblivion. But owing to various considerations, my whole pur pose was not finished during my leisure, and has long" since been forced into abeyance by the par amount claims of my ministry. As to the Colonial and Revolutionary periods, the annals of Salisbury would be of more than local interest albeit a popular historian of the Revolution flippantly states that there were scarcely any event, worthy of notice, connected with the i place daring the war. As one of the qld borough town?, it was a historical centre, with wl.ii-h' most, if not all, the signal events of the surrounding territory, were in some way associated, i Is not the same true of the other boroogh3'of Colonial times? In the last inter view that I enjoyed with the late Gov. Swain, he remarked that it would be a good thing if a thorough history of all tlieboroiigh towns should be written naraiog Hillsboro especially. As I have no time to complete the tak I be gan, I expect, if opportunity favors, to give your paper an occasional article on the earlier d.tys of Salisbury, and to transfer at least a part ol ihe matter ip ban 1, relating to the Confederate t:uc. to ih tVatc't.uj i or other japers. hoiid any woo kindly turn:hcd me with material, desire any particular disposition of i., they haveijuily to inform me of their wishes.
