They kept op all manner of exciting exercises, and large quantities of coffee, and one of them4 won the bet, though with the loss of twenty-five pounds in weight. Two fell asleep on horseback and one fell off and broke bis arm. This circumstance recalls a similar attempt made bv Freder ick the Great, when Crown Prince of -Prussia, to keep awake a certain number of days, and the almost fatal results to the Prince and his companions, who, in a drunken frolic, bad made a foolish wager, Soldiers, printers, and members of various trades have been known, in emergencies, te go without sleep for many days. But then tbe object of tho night watchers re lieved the sufferers from the pains of their lorced wakefulness. Remedy against Chinchbuos. The report of tbe Department of Agriculture, I for 1871, mentions salt as a remedy against the chinchbug. The mode of applying toe remedy is stated as follows : "Take a pail of water with a half gallon of salt well stirred into it; with a small broom or bunch of feathers, sprinkle well a row of corn just ahead ot the bugs, tak iog care that the ground between the hills is well sprinkled with the brine." The eorreenondent. who recommend the rpm dy to Ihe entomologist, says : "The bugs J ii . The Report adds: Tti. i . j This remedy is merely menfoned, as, annum iue cumciiourg appear in various places in the field at once, the remedy vould be of little avail, and the brine it too stronewould undoubtedlr iniure th plants. . , .
