But for whom f Was any one ever benefitted by the experience siWmUsm We dqubtit Hieseintertoifatious suggest themselvea from the tuere of- crime among the ne groes in litis neighborhood, recently especially among the younger portion oi them. During the past weeK, turce ne irro boys in this Township were arrested and bound over to Court tor offences, that will doubtless consign them to tbe Peni- tentiary all of them under 14 yeais of age. -AH three of them, doubtless, with their parents, were present and attentive listen ers to Dr. Palmer, when be addressea tne colored people, but a f.w days before and warned th-m so strongly against ldleuess and its accompanying vices We say at tentive, for the negro is ti.e best listener, and so say all public speakers who have addressed them. But their attenliveuess is no evidence of the impression beibg made. The conclusion is being irresistibly forced upon our mind, thnt the future of the negro in these Southern OUtes is to be aadark as his own ebony hue. This simple fact forecasts his doom, that by designing men of his own and whiter ekiu the impression has been made upon his mind, that the emancipation proclamation freed him and his offspring from alt obligation to labor. Consequeni- ly he is bringing up his children in idle ness and laziness We venture the asser tion, that theie-is not a solitary negro boy undei fifteen years of age engaged in any regular employment in this town; with nut an exception they spend their tune in basking in the. sun on the cellar doors by day, and making the streets hideous with their noises by night. To-be sure they are being sent to school, with the view of makii g clerks, teachers, lawyesrs, doctors and preachers of tire in ; but the mile smattering of knowledg they may by chance pick up is but mon certainly preparing in. -in for the peniten tiary or the gallon s.
