Cirtlifli HJatcljman LOCAL. OCTOBER, 1. Kain fell 4a great abundance throughout last Ifonday. Thi Hickory Fair has been post poned iwtoiT. A tot of tlegant cigars juat received a t A. J. Mock At Co'a. Octri, 4ta. A Bald Eagle has been seen piroottog aroond the farm of Mr. Chalmers McNeely. . - Gold Peos, Gold Pods, at Bell k Bros', See sign of Large Pen I get ad. of Euttisa Ac Harris in another column. New Goods are coming in, some of our Merchants ha log returned from the Noah, Miss Jane Caldwell's school opens to day. The building has been made most comfortable, and otherwise well arranged. The new Hay Prats referred to by ns last week, was finally gotten to work late last Saturday evening, and did good wort ? The Ruin and wind Monday washed and blew off nearly all the show pictures, yet the show will he here on time all the same-. The Raleigh Crescent has been discon tinued. It was a bright luminary while it did last, and we very much regret its suspension. Messrs. Orupy Sc Klntiz have thei flouring n ills again under way and are turning ont good flour and ux r1. Their saw mill is also running. Messrs. Bean it Chester have establish ed a lumber yard at the depot in tbia city where the public can be supplied with any quantity needed at reasonable rates. Mrs. Tern II has rtmovrd her Millinery establishment to the room formerly occu pied by A. Parker, on Main Street in front of the Murphy Brick Row. Mr. J. 11. lhornwell,a liceuciate of the Presbytery of South Carolina, was received by Concord Presbytery, on the 24tb inst., and ordained and iuetallcd Pas tor ot the Poplar Tent Church, in Cabar rus county. Street Repairs A larger amount of work baa been done on our atreets and pavements this year than uiual. The character of the work is also a good aver age, aa compared with that of previous years. Dramatic Club. We are glad to learn that this club is preparing to giro two or three entertainments during Fair week. This is a good thing, we need something of this kind to entertain at night the immense crowds of people that will be gathered here at that time. The success of the club in the past is a suffi cient recommendation to insure crowded houses in the future. The young men deserve much credit for the spirit of im provement which they show, it is evident they are doing something to enliven onr city, and surely it is needed. National Hotel. Visitors to th State Fair, Members of the Legislature, and the travelling public should bear in mind that the National Hotel, Raleigh, N. O . ranks first in the State. Col. C. S. Brown, the Hotel Prince of the State, is at the bead of this house, and his reputa tion as a good feeder is known all over the United States. Hip table is sound antly supplied with the best of all markets. He ha a new and elegautly furnished bouse, iso patns are sparea to mane nts guests comfortable. Don't fail to stop at the National when you visit Raleigh. Dissolution. It will be seen by re for nee to our advertising columns that the late popular Firm of McNeely & Wal ton has beeu dissolved. Mr. J. D. Mc Neely goes out, but the business i eon tinned under the New Firm. of Walton it Ross. Mr. Walton was of the old firm, Mr. Ross, the uew member, has been do ing business for it, and is not only popular, but industrious enterprising, and experi enced. The new firm is a good one. Suc cess to it. Mr. McNeely, the retiring member, will soon open a banking establishment, where he hopes to be useful to his fellow citizen. We think him well qualified for this uew undertaking. Old John Robinson s Show. This vast combination of menageiie, and circus, is now on its fifty first annual tour, and Will exhibit here Oct. 8. Mr. Roblnton baa been btfore the public as a showman for so many years, that the people know him well, and know that they will never be disappointed by any statement as to the magnitude of bis exhibitions. We reiterate the opinion of the press and public, wherever he has exhibited this season, when we say that his present show far surpasses all his pre- v ions effects as a manager. From a osn her of favorable notices, we dip the fol lowing from the Pittsburgh Dispatch : "John Robinson ha moot assuredly c nos en a suitable name for bis vast com bination, in calling it 'he Great Ekpoai t ion of the Wonders no exhibition, could be more deserving of that title for with in vast tents erected on the Robinson lots can be seen many varied and wonderou expositions of equestrian and calistheuic art. The equestrian display is among 1 . Lollow the clown has the faculty of k m wing How to please his audiences. In fact, we thtok the circus ia the best we have seen, and such seems to be the general opinion, for all seem delighted and pleased. The menag erie embraces many rare animals, and we are not surprised at the liberal patronage extended to this exhibition. The entire eutertainment is conducted and managed J with a degree of excellence one seldom notices with traveling institutions." Mfclj fte mj Up..
