It may seem very hard, but it will instil the great priu ciplc of being true to your word. Since our last issue we have learned additional facts concerning the homicide which was perpetrated in Haywood coun ty ou Thuisday latt. The party of young men consisted of about seven, from Wil- mmgtou and ayetteviiie, and among these was Mr. T. hnmas Wright Strange, Mr. Bridgers, and John D. Williams, Esq., the last named of whom was a resi dent of this city a few years ago. They were on a pleasure trip through the mountains, and spent Wednesday night at Way nesville, Haywood county. Thurs day morning they were to go further west to visit Cattalonche Falls. A young man named James Murray, son of Sheriff Murray, of Haywood, bad been employed to crry a portion of the party to the Falls, in bit back. A dispute sprang up be tween Strange and Murray, about Mur ray's being a little behind time, during which Murray gave Strange tbe lie. By . 1 . aa s aaa a tne mterterance ot tnends a difficulty waa prevented at that time. When tbe party bad driven about thirteen miles from Way nesville, a wheel of the hack broke and Murray weut off to a neighboring bouse to get something with a-Inch to fix it and while detained at tbe place the par ty, with the exception of young Strange, engaged in a game of euchre to while away tbe time. Young Strange stepped up to where tbey were playing and asked young Mr. Bridgers to lend him his pistol. isridgers handed it to him, and Strange then left the party at their cards. Shortly afterwards tbe discharge of a pistol was Heard, and when tbe party reached the spot where the pistol was fired, they found Murray shot through the heart and dead. and young Strange near by. no one witnessed the shooting, and Strange, by the advice of counsel, has made no statement aa yet as to what took place between them when they met. Strange aud Bridgers were arrested and are now lyiug in Way nesvi lie jail. Exaggerated statements of the matter spread over the county, and a handled or more men assembled at Waynesville. Obser ver. 4 ifrhoi Unjust Discrimination by Federal Government. the It is an established fact, we believe, says the New York Herald, that in this country one man is as good as another; uut it is nut so eviuem mat one otato is as good as another. Here, for instance, is Illinois. It is a large State, a fertile State, a populous State, a wealthy State. it is the btatejrom which General Grant entered the army iu 1861. It is the State ironi which he appointed his excellent minister to France. It ia the State which contains ireneral Liogan. It is, on all tnese and many other accounts, a State wnicn noes not deserve at the bands of the federal government such a grave and Tbe New York Herald commenting on the treatment of Jefferson Davis by tbe people of Winnebago county, Illinois, and by tbe Grand Army of tbe Republic, magnanimously and truthfully vindicates Mr. Davis as follows If Jefferson Davis is an unwelcome guest at a Northern agricultural fair then no other Southerner who fought in the war ean be welcomed. We do not see where the members of the Grand Army of tbe Republic draw the line betweeu Jefferson Davis and Gen. Lougstreei, unless in this Mr. Davis preferred to cherish the convictions with which he entered the rebellion, while General Long street has accepted the doctrine of the - a w i Republican party. Air. uavis was no more responsible for the rebellion in the South than any one of a thousand other m a m .a men. lu tu-t, oetore tne war, wnile tbe question of secession was under dis- i s 1 cussioo, ne waa among the more moderate of the Southern leaders. There were twenty members and Senators in the Con gress which preeeeded the rebellion more active than Mr. Davu iu bringing about hostilities and more responsible for the result. Mr. Davis aud his colleagues in that Congress followed public opinion in tbe South, and did not lead it. Mr Da vis was put at me oean or tne Unutedet- acy simply because he had more charact r than most of tbe Southern leaders. Lreu as it was the Confederate , Congress al most elected Mr. Toombs, of Georgia. rhe election of Mr. Davis was the ex ores ion of a conservative sentiment even in the Southern Confederacy. A- President of the Confederacy Mr. Davie did his duty as well as be kucw how. He did what any other Southern leader would have done in tbe earn place. He stood by his post to the end. When he fell he fell with tbe Confederacy. Therefore, to ft . ft tl T deal witn Air. uavis as in any way more responsible for the rebellion than any tone of the conspicuous men of the South before the war is to do him a great injus tice and ourselves a discredit." And of the Grand Army of the Repnb lie the Herald says : "This organization ia known to be political and secret iu its character, Its members use their army record for selfish political purpores. The true Boldiera of the North and South have foi gotten every thing of the past except its glory, and tbey think only of their oponenta aa chrvolrous and brave men. There ia not i true Southern man who took part ia the confederacy who will not feel that be cannot be welcome in on v communitv ... j which renounces tbe President of bis Confederacy aa an "arch traitor aud coward." To the charge that Jefferson Davis is a coward the Auarusta Constitutionalist eloquently replies : Coward !' You call him. that, gentle man t The history of the battle of Buena Vista contradicts you. When Col. Bowles and his regiment of ndiauians fled like a flock of sheep before Gen. Mienon. or. as yonr Gen. Shields graphically describes it, 'the regiment ran like a pack of cow ards, with its Colonel at the head.' Jeff Davis and his immortal Mississippians opened ranks and allowed them to pass to the rear, and then closed with the Mex icans in tbe deadliest conflict recorded in American history. The onset of eight thousand of the enemy, headed by their moat gallant leader, and fighting under the very eye of Santa Anna, was arrested aad hurled back. At the first fire Col. Davis waa shot, but he remained in the saddle at tbe head of his men throughout the culminating moment of that battle and the balance of tbe day. Had they been successful, Washington's Battery would have been captured, Gen. Taylor's left wing would have been turned, bis retreat to Saltitlo cut off, his army surrounded and made prisoners of war. The Amer ican army that day was lost by the cow ardice of your Col.
