Cole's New Yore aid New Okxsavi Circus A Great Day in Richmond. No event of reeent occurrence has stir red to its depth the hearts of young Rich mond like the circus, tne arrival of which was made known to all yesterday bj a brilliant street-parade. The band wagon, drawn by two horses and ten camels; the gay and nimble foot ponies; the pi amp elephants and the cages of wild animals, ormed a scene too enticing to be resisted by ordinary humanity. The streets were crowded. The procession moved between two rows of people numbering thousands. No conqueting bero, marchmg between his armed hosts upon parade, was ever the recipient of more ardent admiration. I be crowd assembled under the canvas yesterday afternoon was vety large. Every seat was filled and hardly a dozen more could have been packed in. Most of the visitors lingered awhile in the outer teats before they entered upon the joys of the circus. There is a group oi wax fi area represehting 31 r and Mrs Bcecher, Mr and Mrs Til ton, and the lost Charley lioss, to be seen in the hrst tent f there are three tents), which every one stops to iook at. ne steam man is there also to be viewed. Iu the next tent there is a menagerie. It is very extensive, the specimens are fine, and are in excellent condition. The seatlion, the giraffe, and some other rare animals claim attention. 1 be elephant is the jolljeat of his race and seems really to be plcssed with his situation in me. in that respect be differs from the lions, tigers , and wolves, whieb continually fret at their prison-bare, and seem to pine for the desert and freedom. The c rcua proper is the renter of at traction. The bare back riding was ad mirable; it could not have been better. The preforming lions are a wonder, so is their keeper, who plays with them and the leopard, as any one else would with a dog. The acrobatic feats are not to be ei celled. The trick ponies are wonderful indeed. Many other things are notieea able, though to mention them here would make onr lists too long. The leap over twenty-five horses was a surnriainc feat. and places the artist who accomplished it . a r r . - in tne tore front ot bis profession. The clowns do well as actors, and say some good things. A great many poor things generally heard at circuses they prudent ly omit. Altogether, the circus is worth seeing. It is probably, the very best one travel-' ing, and those who cannot find in it much to enjoy are hard to please indeed. There was a superb audience last night and there will be chances for two more lo Hay. Richmond Dispatch, 2Ut inst. The above Circus and Menagerie will exhibit here, Friday, October 15. Sausbtxsy, N. On Sunday last the new Presbyterian Church, at Franklin, in this county was dedicated to the worship of Almighty God. Accepting the offer of a seat behind Capt. P. B. Kennedy's span of bays, we drove out to find an immense concourse of people assembled, including quite a number from town. The church was packed at an early hour, not more than half the crowd being able to squeeze in. 1 wo sermons were preached, and the rite of baptism, and the sac rament of the Lord's supper administered, in addition to the dedicating services. Between the sermons the whole grove was spread Out with tables, loaded down with dinner, and all present were amply fed. The new church is a credit to the Franklin people. It is a handsome frame structure, x 36 by 58 feet, including ves tibule, above which is a gallery ! Painted within and without, with handsome pulpit, elegant lamps, comfortable pews, convenient book racks, Ac, &c., and wilL seat nearly a: many persona as any church in Salisbury. There waa a protracted seryice at this church from Thursday of last week to Monday night of this, conducted by the Rev. Mr. Mack, of Rocky River ; Rev. Mr. Crawford, the Evange list ; and Rev. Mr. Rumple, of Salisbury re sulting in an addition of 12 members. The community at Franklin is one of the most thriving to be found anywhere, and of it we shall have more to say heaafter. By - the- wav. we learn from Maj N. F. Hall, how this church came to be named Franklin. The Maj aavs he went to school there in ioZi. and at a little later time Rev. Franklin Watt, a Presby terian divine, preached in a school house near where the present church stands. During his ministry, probably about 1826, s church was built, and in his honor it was named Franklin, which name the community, and eventually the township, took. "He, being dead, yet speaketh." 'What makes a knave a child af God" "And one of us? A livelihood." "What's orthodox and truo believing" "Against a conscience? A good living." "What makes all doctrine plain and clear ?" "About two hundred pounds a year." "And that which was proved true before," "Prove false again? two hundred more." As suitable to the times as was the above when Butler wrote, in the quotation suitable for to-day. With shocking sen 8 bility does honesty look upon the knaves. and tney are many,; who lor a pittance will sell their independence of mnl and thought, and truckle to the biddings, tastes aud forms or the powerful. Shame to the conscience of noble man mau whose conscience has matured in ao education uatural to him living in the bright blaze of civilization and on lighteument. Shame to God's noblest work, when he sinks his noblest attrib ute in a conformity to that which makes his soul to sicken, and bis heart's blood boil within him . Oh, that peace and plenty would bles'our land bountifully, that men migut forget their beastly attrib utes and learn godliness, purity end char. lty. With what a tame feeling of pleas ure does honor, forced by the cursed cus toms of the times, shaked the proffered nand ot forsaken principle.
