McXeely's barn, near the Rowan line, was fired, and all 4ts contents of nrovender grain, Ac, destroyed, including ail his horses, four in number. On Thursday nitrht last. John T. Goodman's barn, in Rowan, with its contents or provender and grain, one horse and one Cow, was destroyed. Mr. Goodman's son in attempting to save some property in the barn, was overpowered by the heat and fell, and must have perished had he not been rescued by a negro man living on the place. - He was badly burned. Tracks were found leadinc to and from Goodman's barn, and at last accounts the neighbors were endeavoring to trace them out. Horrible Homicide. A thrill of horror ran through the communi ty on Saturday morning last. The tidings swiftly spread that a terrible stabbing aff-.ir had taken place, in which one brother aged about four teen had fatally wounded a younger broth er age nearly eleven year.-. Upon exami nation we found that the report was only too true, and the circumstances about as follows Sam Johnson, a youth who has heretofore been spoken of in these JRlumns as a klentomaniaca I genius, in a boyish quarrel with his younger brother r red, had stabbed him in the back just under the left shoulder blade, penetrating the lung, and producing a mortal wound. Drs Caldwell and Whitehead were called in, and rendered all the aid possible, but the little fellow died on Monday morning about sun-un AJiw H a very sad affair, and whilst the case occurred in a family where moral restraints are bnt rarely if at all, exercised, and whose history and surroundings have been and are bad, simi lar cases do sometimes occur where they are not expected. The rule of proper training, however, holds good, and" in this fact society owes a debt to itself for the neglect of which it is sure to pay the penally in horrors and in costs. , A Pis-Back Scese. As we were pissing down Lorg street this evcuing, we saw two young ladies rigged up in their p?nbacks ot the very latest cut. As they were walking along thtry saw a dollar note lying on the eide walk, they stopped and kicked it over with their feet to see whether it was Mecklenburg paper or not. rinding it all right, the question arose, how should they get itt For one time the piu-backs were in tbe way. They tried to pick it up but it was no go, they could n't come will, in a foot and a half of it. The next effort was made' with two sticks but -the result was, as before a fail- nre, when at lust the larger one of the two became enraged, when she seized her companion hy a leather belt tbat was round her waist, held her out at arms length, then gently lowering her to tba grouud, exclaimed, 4(ihar now, pick it op !" GRANGE MEETING. The subordinate Granges of Rowan held a County meeting at Oak Grove, Monday last. Gen. D. H. Hill, of Chariot to. nna hru-tlforl Irk make an adtlre to Ihem on the occasion, but from some canse failed to out in Ins Aiinpitr. a - ance. His place was filled by Mr. Smith, tbe 6tate lecturer, who performed the dutv in a very handsome manner. Mr. Smith made no such attempt at oratory as we suppose Gen. Hill would have displayed ; but as a drill mas ter we very much doubt whether the General could have done belter. By-the-way, this Grange movement, if it liven, will certain work out important changes in the business a Hairs of the country and in the relation the farmer community sustains to oth er business classes. The aims of the organiza tion do not spring so much from antagonism to other classes as from the motive of self-protection and mut.il support of each other. Their efibrts are directed to these ends ; and their success or failure depends entirely on the wis dom of the measures selected for their accom plishment. The organization is yet in its infancy, being only nine years old. When we consider the length of time it usually, requires to perfect any new system, or even machine we may not affect surprise that the Grajige movement ! i as not yet wrought miracles or done any very wonderful thing. If they hold on to Hhe cardinal points of the organization they .must necessarily pass through an era of expe riments before they reach the success at which they aim. The greatest danger besetting them is that of growing weary, and falling to pieces before they shall so far perfect the working of their system ss to attain in good degree the ends aimed at. Other classes who have organ ized for the same purposes encountered similar difficulties; and in the ever changing affairs of men, new difficulties may be expected which will require wisdom and patience to meet and surmount. It must not be supposed tbat the farmer class of the country is less able to work out on organized system to give ends than other classes, though it be true, tbat but few of them are familiar with the complex machinery era ployed for sucb purposes. They have already, accomplished a grand organization through which they can hold intimate communion with' each other from one end of tbe country to the other. That of itself is no small tbingj and they are now capable of exerting a greater power than sny similar organization, in the land. Doubtless they will sometimes fail to direct their great strength wisely,- and some times omit to employ it when they might. But the country may rest assured that there is a giant io the land, and tbat sooner or later he . aaa a.- a a' . 1 V wui maze nimseu respected.
