The greatest excitement will be over the election of Speaker. It has been eighteen years since a Democratic Speaker wasjeieeted. James L. Orr, of South Caroliua who lately died as Minister to Russia) was elected as a Democrat; on the 7th day of Dee. 1857, Speaker of the House of Repre sentative of the thirty-fifth Congress; and served until March 4, 1859. He was suc ceeded by William Peuniagton, of New Jer sey, who was elected as a compromise Re publican, after a protracted balloting of about eight weeks. On February 1, lsGO, Galusha A. Grow, of Pennsylvania, was elected Speaker of the House of Representa tives of the thirty-seventh Congress, which met July 4, 1861. He was succeeded by ehuyler Colfax, of Indiana, for the thirty- eighth, thirty-niuth and fortieth Congresses. Aud Mr. Colfax was succeeded by James G. Blaiue, of Maine, for the forty-first, forty- seeond and forty -third Congresses. The Democratic majority in the forty-fourth Con gress is so large that there is no doubt a straight-out Democrat will be elected Speak er. The candidates for this position who have thus far beeu spoken of, are chiefly Mes.-rs. Krr, of Indiana; Randall, of Pennsylvania; Cox aud Wood, of New York; Lamar, of Mississippi; and Walker, of Vir ginia. It is generally thought tne place will be given to a man either from the North or West. Messrs. Kerr, Randall and Wood seem to have the best chances. The Clerkship. The Clerk it the next most promi nent officer of the House. His duties are of very great importance. By a law passed in 1867, when the Republican party were in very great terror of President John son, he Cletk alone is empowered, to decide a poa the prima facie claim of a member. and there is no appeal from bis decision. The talary of the C lerk is $5000, per annum. with perquisites amounting to about $1,000 more. He gives bond in the sum of $20,000 for his disbursement of the contingent fund of tne House. 1 he Ulerk has the appoint ment of about seventy assistants clerks and messengers, whose salaries range from $12.00 tp $3,000. per au num. Who will be the Clerk? There are numerous candidates for this po sition, the most prominent of which are our distinguished Townsman, the Hon. Francis E. Shober; George M. Adams, of Kentucky; Stevenson Archer, of Maryland; A. D. Banks, of Mississippi; Thomas Whitehead of Virginia; D. W. Dubose. of Georgia; T T. G ri ten den. of Missouri and 0 has. A. Eld- reage, of Wisconsin. It is believed that the C'erkship will be conceded by common content, to the South, a Inch is understood not to advance any claims to the Speaker ship.
