The Charlotte papers report a considerable disturbance there on the afternoon of Christmas day, in which one negro and a huree were kiU led, and six or eight negroes and as many white men wore hurt. Whiskey was at the bottom of it dranken negroes on a big spree, got up a fight with a drunken while man ; commenced with tones and clubs ; refused to he aomon ished by the officers of the law, and eud- ed with pistol', and one man - a leading negro shot through the right lung and th heart. A jury of inquest trying to find out whu did the killing. All quiet a pretty soon after it was over, the guilty ones lying very sliil, or making track opt ward. Housebreaking and robbing have be come ahumi g common. Almost every newspaper you pick up gives the details of some new case. Bauke, stores, shops and ptivate residences, all ,riir alike. Everybody knows of the prevalence of this crime, and many pasa their, days and nights in dread of the prowlers. And yet when one of the .rascals is cap tured, tried and condemned, the (iovenor is immediately impoiiuned fairly be- eoigo.d to pardon Jinu The jurj which convicted him joins in the prayer fur his release, and thus the end of the law are defeat .-t and ra?cas emboldend- ed. This false sympathy for crimiuals is all wrongi aud more than any other one cause, encourages crime. The lawrelow and uncertain at best, should take its regular course, and boLpaid out to every offender.
