THtf NIGHT A; WYOMING MAN
SPENT. WITH A MOUNTAIN
LION. 1
The Cheyenne Neves hxis'an account
of liow Nathan . AYilltams, near Kort
juararate, sol away; irora a mountain
lion. Mr. Williarns resides ori a ranch
near the fort, and recently, while in
the 'mountains a,fter fire-wood, sat
down in a clump of bushes to adjust
his over-shoes. 1 Hearing- the bushes
crackla. behind, he f locked around to
see who was disturbing his meditation,
and "was somew-hat surprised, if not
startled, to look into the eye3 of a
mountain lion. Mrv Williams 1 "was
quite vexed thaMhe lion should 'in
trude upon him in; this unceremonious
manner, and, therefore, slapped liim

whereupon the I toil ran away, and Mr.
Wiljiams didn't' follow hjra. Mr.
Williams lives in !ja house with; one
room, the only ccenpaut-, besides him
self being a hired .German. That
nifflrt he was suddenly awakened bv
the lion jumping in through the win
dow, deliberately walking across the
room, ana very composedly laying
himself down by the fire-place, . Mr.
Williams doesn t keep a hotel, thcre
fores wished that hi3 guest had less
cheek, and had remained out of the
house until invited in. The broken
sash and window was another matter
which preyed upon his mind, and it
was a matter of dotibt how, if ever,
he'd get his pay for that. He lay- in
his Cot for a long time, cogitating in
his mind how to manage. His rifle
was in reach, and once he became so
angry that he cocked it and prepared
to shoot, but just then bethought what
a mean advantage he would be taking
ofthe lion, who was enjoying the hos
pitalities of the house unbidden, be
sides, he was afraid that he would on
ly wound the animal, when the latter
might take the little joke as an insult
and inflict punishment. Therefore he
decided not to shoot, but remained
quiet, not forgetting, however', to keep
his rifle in his hands and ready cock
ed. It was a bright moonlight night,
and no curtain, not even gla?s, inter
vened to render the cabin dark and
dim. The big' logs in the fire-place
cast a comfortable glow over 'the room
and, as the lion was stretched t full
length enjoying the warmth, the pic
ture was a beiuliful one, although Mr.
Williams .did not enjoy "it. The
phlegmatic German was snoring away
like the bass notes of a trombone, in
different and oblivious to these mat
ters of interest. The. night seemed to
be a long one. It appeared toie
owner of the cabin as though some
modern Joshua had been along and
etopoed the moon-. "He- grew tired of
waiting though, singular as it mayJ
appear, iie did not grow sleeps. It was
his usual custom to get up lirst in the
moniiug, but on this occasion he con

ly changed his position, and his purr
ing sounded to Mr. Williams like
thunder. Daylight at length dsegan
to licht up the country, and Hans
crawled out of his bed, gathered Ills'
pants in. his hands aud started to the
fire-place to dress by its warmth. Just
as he raised his right leg to thurst it
down into his pants his gaze rested
upon the lion. For about half a min
ute he didn't sav anything, but his
eves bulged out like a eea crab. Hei
then gave a shoat which was enough
to waken the dead, and nearly lifted
the roof from the cabin. It lifted the
lion who vith a howl of fright, sprang
out ofthe window, Mr. Williams giv
ing him a parting salute as he went
out. The state-of their appetites and
and the high prices of food rendered
it necessary that they should economise;
therefore they ate a light breakfast.
The repast ended they went out to
look for their night's guest. The
snow on tho ground was marked with
blood, and they had no difficulty in
tracing him. In a short time he was
overtaken, whereupon each opened
fire, and the lion "shed out his life
sweetly there.' He was a monster in
size, weighing 517 pounds.
