DEATH OF SENATOR MORTON. The death pf this distinguished man was duly noticed at Washington l)y the ob servance of the usual formalities, Anum lier of Congressmen also attended his fu neral, and now the newspapers of the country, about 10,000 in number, are fin ishing up the subject, some with ample coluniusjof prajse, others with sentiments of doubtful commendation, while othere still, very briefly and piquantly lay him away as it rather wilhpg to nave no more of him. He was hard on tho Sputh, aud headed nearly all "the bitter movpniepts made againsfe-us by tho Radical party in ; .the days when it was rampant, insolently oppressive, aqd seemed to rejoice in the anguish of tho southern people. He was one of the few who never relented, and only ceased to be hurtful after the public sentiment of the country commanded the dogs of war to be w ithdrawn. And now he is gone. We have no doubt he was a conscientious man : that he really bejieved that he was doing God-service in all he did that was hurtful to this section of the pountry, and probably on his dying bed ex pected to be rewarded for his zeal. Other wise, he was a monster while living and shouldiiave been a pepiteu at death. He was intellectually greatj atjd therefore ex erted apowerfol influence, over, the party to whieh he waa allied. , Hft ljved long enough to gee his party vgauing, apd to ; perceive that with its numbered days his s pwn fame would also close. y- : .
