Of printing pa per made from straw wo do not propose to speak just now, The genuine article may be seen fl'ing from the hands of cart- i i. thn. 1 no of Fulton Street, west of Broadway (in course of reception or delivery), at almost any time Jjctwccu dawn aod eve, barely g0 cheerily up all the nine flights, seem clearing tho heads of pedestrians on the jngly none the worse for it, Within a sidewalk, The question, What becomes year ho also told the writer that he still of all the pins?" which has so long con- continued duiub-belTaml club work be founded tho philosophers, is less diflioult foye breakfast daily, and simply because than the effort to pjcplaiu the final desti- nation "and uses of all this paer, We must at once look to tho oxports to Ha vana and South America, and comr meace an investigation. These exports are simply enormous, both by steamers and sailing vessels, anl the several com? mission houses filling' orders in the trade are kept busy throughout the year, In case shipments are checked from any cause, or more especially if receipts from the manufacturers are unusually free (fa vored of late by the open winter), large warehouses are filled to overflowing. Even the railroad depots are choked by the accumulations, Whence the demand giving rise to this extraordinary produc tion t The dealers themselves shako their heads mysteriously, and confess that it js very strange, while some of them sur-r raise that tho great bulk of exports is coq sumed in the adulteration of tobacco, or rather as a substitute for tobacco in the manufacture of cigars, There are others who speak of this as an absolute fact, from their own knowledge, Indeed, the state roents made on this point afford no rear sonable ground for doubt. Even in New York the practice of saturating paper with tobacco-juice by third-rate manu facturers of cigars is by no racaus uncom mon. A merchant supplying instances of this class remarked to us that the strongr et Kentucky leaf is preferred in making the decoction; that intruth, such perfec tion has been reached in the flavoring process that the peculiar pungency upd aroma imparted by a certain admixture 4Ve Of paper are a recommendation of the goods, If one will examine this paper closely, numerous small, dark specks will be found ou ovrey sheet. These aro par ticles of rye ground up with the straw. Jkingof an oily nature, they do pot ab sorb tobacco juice Jjke tho body of the paper, so thajt- wheu tho sheets are dried After the bath tho spots come out white, in close roserablauco to tho seed leaf, This kind of paper is preferred by experts to any other, Pies are used iq some iur stances to make a ragged edge to the bogus leaf, Aside from the qualities already spoken of, derived from the use of paper, it is claimed that the cigars thus mado is actually improved as a consequence of the chemical action of lime contained in the paper after tho bleaching process neu tralizing the otherwise injurious effects of the- nicotine, Cigars, where paper is an ingredient, burn easily, and tho ashes are very white, Exports of this paper began only six or seven years ago, and now we are sending jt oveu to Europe, The other day a r merchant in IJroad Street proposed to contract for 100,000 reams for the Cu ban market, taking 5,000 reams a week. On Jlroadway, is a. merclianj; who often buys at one time from 75,000 to 100,000 reams, and purchases of 50,000 reams are frequent, the custom being to buy when the market is low, and hold subject to rder. Another matter in connection with tho rxport trade in this paper is the common practice of shippers to fill up all spare room in their vessels with paper for dun nage, to prevent shifting of cargo. Paper won't rot, and can be fucked in anywhere. But it usually goes in large lots, some times as much as 30,000 reams on a sin gle steamer. It is pressed and bound with hoops, the samp as bales of colfon, to save freight charges. Twenty-two cents iur nine-pound ream is now a common price, though prices have sometimes oeen up w rt -or forty cents, depending on quail- and sunnlies. PROSPECTUS OF The Davidson Record, well known to the people of Davidson county as their campaign paper of loth, is designed to meet a public want of the business men and ot tlie interests 01 the county. The lime has come when almost everv county tnuls it indispensable to liave a public journal of its own to represent its inter ests in the various affairs of business, local and general. There is no county in the State that would not be greatly benehted by a journal within its bounds especially devoted to the pro motion of the local interests of the comniunitv. Such a paper appeals very strongly to the par liahty and prule of the isection it serves; and every citizen should give it his countenance and support it liberally, as a means of increas ing its usefulness and extending its influence at home and abroad. 1 he stronger it becomes the more beneficial it will prove; and ns the monev required for its support is far less than the material good 11 does, 11 is ine Desi invest ment any county can make. The Uecord will ol necessity take part in the politics of the country. If it is the duty ol every man to keep himself well informed in respect to public affairs, and to take a decided, and nianlv part therein, it is especially the duty of the editor of a newspaper faithfully to investigate all questions of public concern. and give to his readeis the facts of the same The undersigned pledges himself to be true in this regard, lie will not knowingly deceive his readers for the sake of party or anything else; but by laying before them the facts, as he may enabled to obtain thern, will endeavor to aid all lo act wisely for the general good. As political matters now stand, his personal con victions are most decidedly in accord with the views and feelings of the Democratic Lonserva live party. He believes that the efforts of this party irt 1876 wrenched from the grasp of tvr ants and corruptionists in high places the civil libertv that we now enjoy. He regards that great victory as second only to that gained by the fathers of 1776. The danger was immi nent, the constant tendency fatal, but the cour age, wisdom and devotion 01 the Ixmservative party proved itself equal to the occasion, and gloriously rescued the imperiled liberties of the people. hue that party shall continue more pure and truly patriotic than any other, he intends to be fully identihed with it. But the main design of The Record is to serve the county of Davidson in all the ways it may be possible to advance her interests and pro mote the welfare of her people. And to this end the undersigned desires such intimate re lations with her citizens as shall enable him to perform his duty efficiently. Tire-paper will be published weekly at 5l a year in advance. It will be small, but neatly printed on new type; and the proprietor hopes to make up in quality what may be lacking in size. The first number will appear about the first week in January, 188.
