Circular. HOW KAISINS ABE I'HKPAKED. A atrip'of land bordering tho Mcditerra pean, somewhat less than iw miles m length and in width not exceeding 5 or C, fsthe tasin producing territory of Spain Beyond these boundaries the Muscatel grape, from which the raisin is princpal- ly produced, may grow and thrive adnn dantljv but the fruit must go to the mar ket or the wwe press, When the grapes begin to ripen in August tho farmer care fully inspects the fruit as it lies on tho wariu dry soil, and one by one clips the clusters as they reach perfection. In al most all vineyards slats of masonry are prepared, looking like unglazed hot beds. and covered with fiue pceblea, on which the fruit is exposed to dry. But the small proprietor prefers not to carry his grapes so far. It hi better,, he thinks, ' to deposit them nearer at hand, whore there is less danger of bruising, and where bees and wasps are less likely to find them. Day by day the cut branches are examined and turned, till they are suotcie utjy cured to be borne to the house, usually ou the hill top," and there deposited in the empty wine press, till enough have been collec ted for the trimmers and packers to be gin their work. At this stago great piles Of rough dried raisins are brought forth from the wine press and heaped upon boards. One by one the bunches are care fully inspected, thoao of the first quality being trimmed of all irregularities aud imperfect berries anddeposited in piles by 'themselves ; so in turn are treated those of the second quality, while the clippings and inferior fruit arc received - into baskets at the feet of tho trimmers and reserved for home consumption. A quantity of small wooden trays are now- brought forward, just the size of a com mon raisin box and about an inch deep. In these papers are neatly laid so as to lap over and cover the raisins evenly de posited in the trays, which are then sub jected to heavy pressure in a rude press After pressing the raisins are dropped into the boxes for market. AN ACTIVE VOLCANO IN THE MOON. When examining the surface of the moon . M ay 7, 1877, Or, Herman n - J. Klein of Koln, noticed .what seemed to him to be a new crater on the Maro Vaporuru, a little to the northwest of the well known crater -of Hygfnus. , Being deep and dark, and about threo miles in diameter, it formed conspicuous object on the dark gfav Mare Vaporum, Haviug frequently ob served this region during' the last twelve years, Dr, Klein felt certain that tho era ter was new. Communicating his obser vation to Dr. Schmidt, of Athens, he was Assured by that veteran selenographer that no uch crater appeared in any of hia numerous drawings of that part of the Unar .mrfc.ee : nor is it akown by Schro ter, Lohrrnann, or madler, who carefully drew the same region with th flue refrac tor of Dbrpat, In April, 1878, Dr. Klein laid the discovery before the Selenographi cal Society, sinco then the now crater has been observed by several English stu dents of the moon. The Maro Yapoi-um lies close to the center of the visible sur face of tho moon, so that objects iu this region are very slightly affected by the lhnar librations. The icgion has. been closely studied by many, and as it conr tains several well known craters, some of them less than a mile iu diameter, it evident that tho large crater described by Klein ia new. x anctihg Himself a Tl kk.
