' The increasiug Wealth of the nation, as weJI as the profitable anil steady employment of its capital and pcop.'e, depends upon a continuallncrease bl the procl uci ng power. W hene ver there are latent resources undeveloped or opportunities for establishing the first foundation of an industry, lead lug as it will to the origiuation of auxiliary ones, an ungual effort should be made to bring it into existence. If inHhe power of individuals to accom plish, so much' the better; if need ing an association with State or national influence, then this associa tion should be formed. It is incum bent uptn individuals that they pos sess a sufficient pride in the prosperity of the country to give every possible attention add assistance to a careful practical demonstration of the feasibil ity ofall the Bew industrial enter prises which may" be presented with reasonable assurance of final suc cess. Not in a great expenditure of mon ey: influence is better than money, and a potential interest in a new en terprise is often better than capital, the industrial resources of the' United States are by no means worked 4o their full capacity. The people by no means make all they consume The finer articles of use, and requiring much labor and often the highest skill, are Imported from foreign nations. A premium of $10,000 offered for- an improved method in any known pre sent process of production or manu facture would be almost sure to be called for. . While America exports 175,000, 000 worth of raw cotton annually to be worked up by other people, , it is not possible to so iucreas the manu facture iu .America as to keep the greater. part of that raw material and to export tire cloth instead ? Is it not practicable to establish great number, more of sugar estates in the same trop ical climate?- Is it not practicable to lay the foundation of half a dozen beet sugar mills in the country? To begin tire weaving of linen -goods, und to teach our farmers that they may produce all the flax fiber as fast as required ? To start a ramie indus try in a small way and teach the process to those who will engage in it? - Will not our silk men put a velvet industry into operation as a germ from which a future industry may grow ? And we might name a hundred other lesser. enterprises which have hardly name in this couutry, but every one of which is needed and will add to the wealth of the people. THE EXFL03IVEXES3 OF FLOUR. Professor Peck and Peekham. of tin; University of Minnesota, having been making an exteusive series, of exper iments to determine the cause of ihe fecenh flour mill explosion at Min neapolis. The substances tested were coarse and fine Wan, material from utoue grinding wheat; wheat dust, from wheat dust house; middlings, general mill dust, dust" from mid dlings machines, dust from flour dust house (from stones), and flour. When thrown in a body on a, light, all these substances put the light out. Blown by a bellows into the air surrounding a gas flame, the follow Vcsults were obtaincdi Coarse bran would not bum. Fine tjran and flour dust burn quickly, with considerable-' blaze. Middlings ' burn quicker, but with less flame. All the other substauces burn very quickly, very much like gunpowder. J h all these cases there was a space arouud the flash where the dust, was liot thick enough to ignite from par ticle to particle; hence it remained In the air after the explosion. Flour dust, flour middlings, etc., when mixed with air, thick enough to ig nite from particle to particle, 'and separated 60 J hat each particle is sur rounded by air, will unite with the oxygen in the air, 'producing a gas ut high temperature, which requires tvn additional space, hence the burst ing. There is no gas that comes fromJ flour or middlings that is an explo bivej it is the direct comWinatbu with thef-air that produces gas, requiring additional - space. Powerfu I electric' sparks from the electric machine and from the Levden iar were tuissnl through the air filled with dust of the different kinds, but without an explosion in any case. A platinum wire kept at a white heat bv a gal vauic battery would not produce uii explosion The dust would collect Upon it aud char to black coals, but would vot blaze nor explode. - A -piece of glowing charcoal kept hot by the bellows, would not pro duce an explosion when surrounded by dust, but when fanned into a blaze the explosion followed. A com mon kerdscuc lantern, when surround ed by dust of all degrees of den sity, would not produce an explosion, but when the dust was blown into the bottom, through the globe and out of the top, it would ignite. To explode quickly the dus; -must be dry. Evidently when an explosion lias been started in a volume of dus ty air, loose flour may be blown into the air and made a source of dan- A VELOCIPEDE I'EATi'EX- Tit AO RD I N AR Y . : . QUICK WORK. -- Two years ago a farmer-miller and his wife, at Carroltr n, Mo., furnished some invited guest with bread baked in eight and a quarter minutes from the time the wheat was standing in the field. This year it was deter mined to make still better time. Ac cordingly elaborate preparations were made to reap, thrash, grind, and bake the grain" with least possible loss of time. In 1 -minute 15 seconds the wheat, about a peck, was cut aud thrashed, and put on the back of a swift horse to be carried to . the mill, 16 rods away. In 2 minutes 17 seconds the flour was delivered to Mrs. Law ton, and in 3m. 55s. from the starting of the reaper the first griddle cake was done. In 4 minutes 37 seconds from the starting of the reaper, a pan of biscuits -was delivered to the as sembled guests. After that, according to the Car rol ton Dimiocnit, other pans of deli cious "one minute'' -.biscuits were bak? ed more at leisure, and eagerly de voured, with the usual accompanie ment of boiled ham and speech mak ing Mr. Orchard, of Cabarrus, the solitary "National" elected to the Legislature, is said by both Cabarrus papers to be hn ex cellent citizen and most estimable man of "age, brains, and prudence" A story of the reeeiit Campaign Will bear repeating, lie. was charged with being an agrarian and Communist.
