. LOCAL OITI0N. j.
We learn that the local option move
ment in this towuship has attracted the
attention of citizens of some of the coun
try townships, who have expressed a de
sire to join in it. The authors of the
movement here are rejoiced at tli is indi
cation of approval, and w ill co-operate
most heartily with every- com in unity
williui to leud a hand. The evil aimed
at is far reaching iu its consequences, and
falls heavily on all industrious and sober
citizens. These stay at home and mind
their own business, toiling late and early.
and theu see their hard earnings, which
should go to educate their children,
swallowed up in , such prosecutions as
that agaiust Bill Locke, and the negro
who Attempted to rob Setzer, and many
others, instigated by liquor. It is a well
ascertained fact that more than half of
the Court costs for the prosecution of
criminals is caused either directly or in
directly by the use of intoxicating li
quors ; and the people who stand idly
y and see murders and other crimes
perpetrated through the influence of a
cause under their control without trying
to stop it, are morally guily of the crimes
committed, and justly suffer the inci
dental penalties of loss of timeand
money by the prosecutions which follow.
The only escape left to those who watit
to have clean hands on this subject and
exemption from material damage, is to do
what they can to arrest the evil. The
Legislature has made it easy for every
township to wipe it out. If the jieople
neglect or refuse to do it, they assume all
the moral responsibility involved, which,
as indicated above, is tearful: anil wil-
ingly lay themselves liable to heavy
taxes. I he nmu who stands by aud sees
a murder committed or the rncendiarv's
torch applied, is held by the law to be
nearly as guilty as he who commits the
crime. And tney who see the evil of the
iqiior traffic and neglect or refuse to do
what that they can to arrest it, will have
to answer for it here and hereafter.

AD DOCTORES.
Mr. Editor: I lire in the hack wood, Mr
houe Htands near the nalijr wall of Kuwait.
The country for miles around, in vulgar par-
sine, i called "The Rocks." Ah to religion,
all belong to the church, being the children of
Abraham. But in no one thing are we no
unaniiuoctfly agreed we are in our opposi
tion to schools and education. When we have
free school for one month during the year, we
alwaya aelect the moat illiterate of our tribe to
do the teaching. Our preachers tell the peo
ple juat what in handed down. Oueold man Mrs
he is a hoin and the Lord blows through him.
There i a belief in this locality, an idea
born perhaps in the brain of the father and in
herited by the children, that mostdiseasea abore
the control of medicine hare their origin in
Satanic malice. This has influenced many of
our elderly women of late to look wisely
th rough the Bible. And according to their in
terpretaiion, witchcraft and spontaneous gen
eration are as clearly taught as infint baptism
In the sacred rolnnie. Htnce the one thing
needful among iu is a practical wilch doctor,"
in full sympathy witbitir mitusteni of religion.
Aa to the animal ruce, we have rome expert
actor, well versed in occult arts. Men whose
names could be given seem to have great
magic power over bonnrs aud their diseases
More than once V hare seen ' these men rub
their hands over the spinal joints of the noble
animal writhing in pain, and by the use of a
few potent word he was relieved in the
twinkling of an eje. , Such persoiiM are of great
service, especially in a region where the light
of science has never tkitud. 1
T In the present year of grae 1879, 6ne of
my nearest neignoors a aunereu untoia horror
and his wife almost driven into spasms by
what they call "being bewiu-bfd. For three
ntghu in succession all the doors of the house
Sew open with great force. At length the
figure of a man of great veneration and age
was seen standing by the well having no bead
and in a moment he vanished into air.
Another close neighbor has had a man of color
prospecting for witches ever since Christmas.
