LOCAL OITI0N. j. We learn that the local option move ment in this towuship has attracted the attention of citizens of some of the coun try townships, who have expressed a de sire to join in it. The authors of the movement here are rejoiced at tli is indi cation of approval, and w ill co-operate most heartily with every- com in unity williui to leud a hand. The evil aimed at is far reaching iu its consequences, and falls heavily on all industrious and sober citizens. These stay at home and mind their own business, toiling late and early. and theu see their hard earnings, which should go to educate their children, swallowed up in , such prosecutions as that agaiust Bill Locke, and the negro who Attempted to rob Setzer, and many others, instigated by liquor. It is a well ascertained fact that more than half of the Court costs for the prosecution of criminals is caused either directly or in directly by the use of intoxicating li quors ; and the people who stand idly y and see murders and other crimes perpetrated through the influence of a cause under their control without trying to stop it, are morally guily of the crimes committed, and justly suffer the inci dental penalties of loss of timeand money by the prosecutions which follow. The only escape left to those who watit to have clean hands on this subject and exemption from material damage, is to do what they can to arrest the evil. The Legislature has made it easy for every township to wipe it out. If the jieople neglect or refuse to do it, they assume all the moral responsibility involved, which, as indicated above, is tearful: anil wil- ingly lay themselves liable to heavy taxes. I he nmu who stands by aud sees a murder committed or the rncendiarv's torch applied, is held by the law to be nearly as guilty as he who commits the crime. And tney who see the evil of the iqiior traffic and neglect or refuse to do what that they can to arrest it, will have to answer for it here and hereafter. Limits tie salary of the mayor to $250.
