i - f . - .-I Care of NaiIs. . .. ' , - i" . ; ... - .- Rome persons insist that the finger nail are pigns of character. The gletir ler tapering nail, they .', indicates a refined nature winch is sometimes accompanied by a tjdirevis!i temper. The broad, stubby nail suggests nat ural coarseness which may be allisd to good nature. Whether these are siofis or not, it is true that the care of the nails reveals personal habits as to cleanliness. NaHs may be greatly improved, both in shape and color, by proper attention. The best appliance is a nail brush nsed in water softened by the addition of a little borax, and really fine toilet soap. I .- - - In well-brushed; ah il well-cared for nails the little curtain-like rim which surrounds them il weir pushed tor rolled back, displaying generallyia , delicate little crescent at the root, f he skin of the fingsr should never be allowed to grow up on the nail. In paring and trimming the shape irivcrv should alwavs be as lonir an o ... - "i i oval as possible. To cut a nail squar Jy off gives the-finger end a stubby look. The corners should be carefully and closelyjcnt, the center left rather long, so as to give the Jong o.val . shape. ; In cleaning the nails the knife should never scrape off the inner sub stance of the nail,as this renders the pdge paqueand hnfddy in appear ance, whereas it should be transpar rent. - The naif is susceptible of a high degree of polish by rubbing jiyitl)he towel when drying the hands. The habit of biting the nails is one against which children should be carefully guarded. It s ruinous to the very structure of the nail, and once acquired, is quo of the most difficult habits to break. This is evi denced by the fact that some men and women but more especially men, have a habit of biting their nails when reading pr studying, of which they are perfectly unconscious. Words of Wisdom. He who. is never gnilty of folly is not so wise as he imagines. Prosperity unmasks the vices; ad versity reveals t-hej virtues. An indiscreet man s like aiiim- sealed letter every one can read it. Some persons mistake noise for ar gument They that govern most make least .noise,. . , He that "too mucli fears hatred is unfit to rule. - The first ingredient in conversation is, truth, the next good sense, the third, good humor, and the fourth wit. .. " J ' . . - JSnvy is a passion so full of cow ardice and sliari that nobody ever had the confidence-to own its posses sion, , The time for reasoning is before we have approached near enough to the iorbidden fruit to look at and ad mire.' j He who is false to the present duly breaks a thread in the loom, and will see the effeets wheri the weaving' of a lifetime is unraveled. Next Summer- Interesting Fads About These Insects. This is to be a good vear for locusts. In the Southern States they willrbc particularly abundant, and it is more than probable that'thejwoods in Ma ryland, Virginia and the District of Colum"biawill reswund with their rat tling songL This will be unwelcome hews to tlje farmers and fiorigts, yho know, from sad experience, the de structive character of these insects.! It i i will be remembered that in the sin mer of 18G3 the locusts were particu larly abmidant in this locality. There was, hardly a foot of ground in the woqils and field3 whieli was not com pletely perforated with the holes out of which the insects had .come. They were 'everywhere aud ate up every thing, causing an amount of damage which is still fresh in the minds of agriculturalists. They will not lap pear fliis season jn such great quanti ties, but iji the year 1885 this vicinity will be again afSicted an abundant visitation. " f ?Tli(?rearc two breeils of the lo cust' said Prof. Riley, of the agricul tural department, to the Post reporter, who called iippn him for information ; "one appears every thirteen years, and the oilier every seventeen years. The season for their appearance and disappearance differs somewhat with the latitude, though not so materially as one niight suppose. They appear a little earlier in the South than in the North, but the last half of May can be set down as the period during which they emerge from tlnfg round, in many pafts of the cou, htry, which they generally leave by he 4th of Juiy. As is the case witlnargreat many other insecjls, the males make their appearance sey erai days .before the females, and also disappear1 sooner. As an evidence of, the success of this proposition, he savs that during the late' war, when there was scarcely any fishing at all, the in crease of fish was almost incredible, and, that at one of his fisheries, soon after the war, he made a "catch" of owr sixty thousand "fih a one haul, being more than he has caught at the same place and with the Kinie seine for the last two years altogether. The only remedy fpr this is to leave enough tor seed.
