ha begun active , ppperations on what
as lormauy known as tho Ritchie mine,
which lies seven inileis south of Salisbury.
f his organization is composed of Boston
gentlemen. Mr. Floyd expresses himself
as Highly pleased with the prospect, aud
thinks that North Carolina mines proper
ly worked will be found as profitable as
any other. His associates are backing
his opinion ina substantial manner. We

WARD 3IINE.
It is reported hero that the old Ward
unuc, bcvcu uiuesiroia J-iCXington, David-
sod County, has been recentlv prospec
ted. The mine was formerly worked for
gold, but the ore lately taken out bv Mr.
Stith (who thought it was lead) was pro
nounced to be silver, by Mr. J. II. Jones,
M. Jvof Lexington. The vein is several
feet wide, and the ore is valned at high
figures. Mr. T. II. and Miss Alberta
Stith owns the property.
BEAVER DAM GOLD MINE.
Messrs. J. C. and Charles W. Edre-
cumbe have sold a portion of Beaver Dam
('', of stock) to the Hon. Frank V.
Hughes of Pottsville, Pa. He is a lead
ing lawyer of that state, .and was former
ly a large and extensive coal miner. The
sale was consummated in Washington
City on the 5th of May. The machinery,
to ran through by his patented process
sixty tons per day, has been ordered, and
woik will be pushed vigorously, a3 a
large number of workmen have been em
ployed.
Beavef Dam is an old mine and has
been known as a paying mine for 5
-years. The consideration of this sale of
stock was a large sum of money.
It will be remembered that the con
trolersof this property are many, of them,
gentlemen high in official position. Among

tying to state that of these.all excepting
tour tamihes have been placed mostly
in Kowan, some few in Cabarrnsj The
farmers are very much pleased with them
and they are very much pleased ;wheie
proper judgment has been used iu their
treatment. They must be treated just
as other white laborers are. They are
not used to eating corn bread arid salt
bacon and must be humored until thev
become accustomed to American diet and
manner of living.

local agent at this place;
It will bo remembered that there will be
a mass meeting here oil Saturday the
14th of May, for the purpose of making
an organized effort to encourage and pro
mote immigration to this county.! All

eaougli to do the work,-for it wilj soon
prove a bnrden. Mr. and Mrs. Negus
and Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Davis have so far
keptlhc depot supplied with coffee made
at their hpines they have of course- been
assisted by contributions from citizens of
the town, but to prepare: from 8 to 16
gallons of - coffee per day requires; time
aud labor. The Railroad authorities cer
tainly owe them a vote of thanks, if
