Conkling uud Piatt not to bo re-elected.
Rain and wind"storih at Charlotte,
Sunday, did considerable damage to the
Methodist chureh. The tin roof was
blowii off aud the rain leaking iu dam
aged 'carpets and other property to the
value of several hundred dollars. Other
property iu the city was also damaged.

Many of those who use it not only dis
qualify themselves for usefulness, but
cause endless trouble ami expense to oth
ers, j Families are impoverished aud dis
graced, aud the burden of relief falls on
friends or the county. Crimes are com
mitted uuder the inllaencu of whisky and
the Whole com ni unity is put to tumble
aud expense on account of it. But it is
vain to undertake, to enumerate the evil
results which tiow from this prolilic
source. They are without u umber. Theb
aic known to every citizen .who under
stands what he sees, aud who is capable
of connecting cause aud effect. All know
and feel that it is a fearful evil that
should be abated, and tha. it is the duty
of every patriot aud chiii-tiau to do what
he cau to put a stop to it. The present
movement against intoxicating liquors
springs liom this uuiversal knowledge of
ics evil effects. It is a spontaneous ex
pression of the public against it, and
men denounce it foi the same reason
which inipclls them to chase aud kill a
mad dog.
GAKFIJELI) AND HIS ENK3IIES.
Politicians at Washington are making
tilings lively. The war between Presi
dent Garfield and Secretary Blaine ou one
side, aud Senator Conkling, of N. Y., on
the other, culminated on Monday last, in
the resignation of his seat in tho Senate
by Mr. Conkling. His Co-Senator, Mr.
Piatt, as a sort "tail to the Conkling
kite," also sent forward his; resignation to
the Governor of his State, aud requested
Vice-President, Arthur, to announce the
same in the UT S. Senate. But it is not to
be supposed for a moment that this encs
the war between the President's backers
aud the Conkling wing of the Republican
party. No one believes Unit either Conk
ling or his co senator has any idea ot
giving up senatorial honors. They have
only let go for a nionlent to spit in their
hands and take a fresh hold. They con
fidentially expect have probably pre
arrangethat the N. Y. Legislature, now
in session with a republican' majority,
will either refuse to .accept the, tendered
resignation of its Senators or re-elect
them. In other terms, it is Coukliug's
trick to return to the battle against the
President aud his party with the whole
State of New York at his back. Mr.
Garfield will bo madu to feel that in re
sisting the dictation of the senator he in
curs the opposition of the Republican
party in the grand Metropolitan State.
And all this contest aud consequent
waste of time and the public money, re
sults i from hatred between Blaine aud
Conkling, both aspirats to the Presiden
cy. Conkling is charged with having
defeated the nomination of Blaine in 1676
and 1830, and for this Blaine has done
everything in his power to defeat the
wishes of Conkling especially iu respect
to the appointment of Robertson as Col
lector of Customs at New York, between
whom and the N. Y. Senator there were
irreconcilable differences. If the latter
shall return to the Senate I with the big
State of New York at, his back, as it is
predicted he will, we shall see how it af
fects Blaine and Garfield, who are equal
ly bent on fighting to the bitter end,
Democrats are Interested spectors of this
war that and no more, except as it may

fight over the spoils of office
