The development of the mining inter

some time since, is still being pushed
forward. There are- three prospecting
parties now at work in the miuitig sec

Philadelphia, has leu at work on a new

From Lk Landmark.
T w ish to say something through the
columns of your paper by way of ; en
dorsement of. the hardware house of
Messrs. Baker & Woods, of Statesville.
This firm has proveti itself a -public bene
faction. It has not only opened a large
and complete stck of general hardware,
which it is selling at the most reasonable
juices, but it lias introduced a great
variety of improved agricultural machin
ery of n class which, prior to its opening
business here, could not be had oiutliu
market Placing this machinery before
the eyes oft he farmers of this and adjoin
ing counties, and puttiugot within the
reach of planters of even moderate means,
it has thus proved itself not only a con
venience to its patron, but has done and
is doing by this means a genuine public
service.
The members of the firm are ener
getic, industrious, sober and reliable
y oung gentlemen, and it has occurred to
me that this tiibute to them was eminently
due. . Very Respectfully. !

English Sympathy with PkesidJcxt
Gakfielu. London. July 25. The Stan
dard in tin editorial article this morning
says: In England every. incident of PrW
ident Garfield's illness is watched with
keen but nionrnful interest. Had he
been a British statesman it, would have
been hardly possible for the English peo
pleto have manifested a rner sentiment
of sympathy than that w hich they have
extended to his faniily and to his coun
try. In no part of the United States will
the news that Mr. Garfield is out of dan
ger be more joyfully received than) in
England'. In no part of the Union will
tins tidings of his death, should that mel
ancholy event occur, ercitc a deeper! or
more general feeling of sorrow than They
would produce throughout ler majesty's
English speaking dominion.
