GoT. IlDlden, in his address before the
N. C. Press Association at Winston, on the
2ist ot June, 1881, on the 4 Uistorv of
J. urnnlisni in North Carolina." pays a well
deserved tribute and compliment to Ed
ward J. IIh!l E.-q , the christian 'tntleman
and patriot who edited the FayeVeiilU
Observer for forty years. We make the fol
lowing extract from the Address:
"Edward J. Hale, Sr., E-q., was born in
Randolph county, October 26. 1802. His
father died when he was seven years of ae.
and hi3 mother when he was nine, leaving
eijiht children. lie was adopted into the
accomplished family of Ins guardian, Col.
Edward Jones, of Rock Rest, Chatham
comity. He was sent to schnnl one year,
find at the end of that time, February 28.
1812. he was placed with. Mr. Gales in the
oliic of the Raleigh Jieyister, with whom
he remained until 1824. He theu went to
Washington City, where he spent one year
in the Intelligencer office, perfecting himself
in his business.- At the end: of this time,
he was invited by John D. Ecclcs, Eq..
and Col. John McRea to Fayetteville, to
assume the editorial control of the Obseixer.
He conducted the Observer from the 8th of
January, 1825, until March, 1865, more
than 40 years, when Sherman's forces
burned his office and book-store, thuti de
priving him of his means of living. This
vandalic act was similar to the outrage of
Admiral Cockburn. of ihe British forces,
who, when he had captured Washington
City in August, 1814, sacked the office of
the National Intelligencer. Forty years of
active industry had blessed Mr. Hale with
a comfortable fortunewhich was well nigh
obliterated by the stroke of vrar. In Au
gust, 18C6, he removed to New York city
and re-opened his business as publisher
and bookseller. Though in his 79th year,
he is still active-and; industrious. A true
hearted North Carolinian, he loves his State
and her people, many of whom honor apd
cheer him by their visits when they are iu
his adopted city. His interest in his native
State, and his industry ; are shown by the
weekly letters he writes for some of our
newspapers. As soon as Mr. Hale's sons
were or age nnd had graduated at Chapel
Hill, he associated them with him in his
business. It is needless to say that their
labors havo been valuable alike to the pub
lic and himself.,
And here it may not be improper to state
that in 1854 Mr. Hale and myself estab
lished the cash system in subscriptions to
newspapers, which has worked so well, and
without which the press of the State could
not prosper. Every subscriber should read j
lus own paper, and when he has paid for it
in advance it is his.
The fayettetillt Observer wielded for 40
years a powerful influence in North Caro
lina. It circulated in every part of the
State, but especially in the Cape Fear
country. Mr. Hale is not a florid writer.
His style is plain and clear, the "pure
English undcfiled." He has that first
quality , of genius, the power of condensa
tion. . . : j
Mr. Halo has shown his good(ense ia
that he has never sought or 1 held public
ofiace," . ' .!
On the 4th of August the people of
Vyieavciana win nave a aouoie election. In
addition to the vote oa prohibition,, they
will also rote on the proposition to sub
scribe f 25,000 to the Virginia Midland.-

The novel feature of the Japunoe fireworks
is that they are sot oif in broad daylight

when it reaches the prescribed -height, sev
