( j Considerable has'lieen latel saM n medical journals concerning i the value of warm milk as a remedial agent in certain diseases. The Chris tian Work, referring to an interesting article on tbis subject which lately appeared in the London Milk Jour nal states, on the authority of Dr. Benjamin Clarke, that in the East Iudies warm milk is used to a great extent as a specific for diarrohcKi. A 'pint every four hours will check the moat violent diarrhce i, stomachache, incipient cholera, and tlyaenterv. The 'milk should never be boiled, but on ly heated sufficiently to be agreeably warm, not too hot to drink. ' Milk which has been boiled is unfit for use. This writer gives several in stances in arresting thedis ase, among which is thebllowing : The writer says: "It has never failed iu curing in six or twelve hours, and I have tried it, 'I should think, fifty times. 1 have also given it to a dying man who had been sub ject to dysintery eight months latterly accompanied by one continued diar rhoea, and it acted on luui like a charm. In two. days his diarrohoea was gone; in three weeks h became a hale, hearty man : and now tiothimr that may hereafter occur will shake his faith in hot milk. A writer has also communicnted to the Medical Times and Gazette a statement of the value of milk in twenty six cifesof ty phoid fever, in evcrv nie of4vhich its great value was apparent. It checks diarrhoea, and nourishes and cools the body. People suffering from diseases need food quite as much u those in health, and much more so in cxrtain diseases where there is a rapid waste of system, frequently allk ordinary iood, in certain diseases, is, rejected by the stomach, and even loathed by the patient : but nature, ever bene Hcient. has furnished food that in all diseases is beneficial in some direct ly curative. Such food is milk." The writer in the journal last quoted. Dr. Alexander Yale, after giving particu lar observation upon the ixtint above mentioned, its action in checking diarrhoea, its nourishing properties ami its action in soothing khe body. . af ' ays: 'Ve believe that milk nour ishes in fever, promotes sleep, wards on delirium, soothes the intestines, and, in fine, is the sine qua non in typhoid fever. ; Ave have lately tested the value o milk in scarlet fever, and learn that it is now recommended by the inedi cnl faculty in all cases of this often very distressing children s disease Give all the milk the patient wil take, even during the period of great est fever. It keeps up the t-treugth o the patient, acts well upon the stom ach, and is iu this way a blcsset thing in sickness. 1,370 feet Deep Zp. The calf, a very beautiful animal, came from Mr. Hewitt's stock farm at Ringwood, New Jersey, and reach ed here by express, last Saturday, af ter Col. Armfield had left jfbr Wash ington. The boys took it in charge and will keep it on their father's farm near town. Mr. Hewitt rhas three stock Atrms one in New j York, an other in New Jersey and another West, and is a very successful stock raiser as well as manufacturer. He is one of the wealthiest as well as! one of the abkst and soundest men in Congress. Landmark, sented by Gen. Sheridan at the clo.se of the war. Gcti. Carle A. WoMlrnn re- meuileretl this incident although Gen. Sheridan had forgotten it. Mrs. Custer recently wrote a letter to Col. Sims iu which she stated that the improvised flag had been treasured by her with other war relics. 44It has," she added, 44nevtr been exhibited or used iu any way that could offend the most seusitive spirit. Gen. Custer taught me early in my married life to look upon our untortuiiate war as too sacredly mid to admit of any feeliug save that of sorrow and regret that one brother's hand should be comiteled to be raised agaiust another. aaoaaa i As to slouchy wives, I have no charity for them ; I would iguore their existence if I could. Many wonder nt the great re luctance of the young men of to-day mar rying ; but when I see the frowsy heads the ttu tidy, unbecoming dresses of the wives of the young men who are married I cease to wonder. It is a little singular that women think it necessary before mariiace to 4fix up" and look always nt iheir best to win kind keen the loves of their sweethearts, but think it altogether unnecessary after marriage. Were wo men as particular to keep themselves looking becoming anu to uc niwaj s in the best of humor when wives as when weet hearts, we would have fewer slight- etl and misused wives in our landi And a tidy, painstaking w ife will always make i liiifttuind less careless and slouchy. A man with a slouchy wife, be he naturally ever so "starchy," never cares much for his own apiearaiice. Profetsor Payne. Some Republican papers, wc ob serve, are boasting that their party came near carrying the recent election in this State almost without the aid of apress. That of which they boast they should count their shame. The reason the Republican party in this State has so few papers is because so few of the members of that party can read. We might carry the reasoning further and prove that their being unable to read accounts for their being Republicans.
