The New York World gives the following account of the funeral : In the first carriage was placed the co (Gu and th clothes of the child, and ill the second were the: relatives and Gee Lund, a friend, each carrying a large bag filled with scraps of paper bearing a few written Words. In China the devil has a habit of racing to the grave aud taking the !xly as soojas it arrives, but the friends of the de ceased throw out these slips of paper and the devil, who is (very curious, stops' to read them, so that the corpse generally reaches thej grave before him. There was no exception to the rule yesterday, for if the devil stopped to read all the slips that were thrown out of "ithe carriage he would have onlv reached' Catherine ferry when the mourners were. returning from the cemetery. At the grave a fire was kindled and the girl's clothes were burned, the relatives; throwing a white Kiwder in the flames which burned with a bluish light. A board vas placed over the grive ou which the name of the child wit$ tiiKcrilicd. I South Carolina is evidently in earnest in her efforts to luring the mills to the cotton. The question of preserving our for ests is one which daily grows m ini porta nee, but it is still one of those matters in which everybody ; is inter ested and about - which - nobody .at tempts to take any decided action. It has been thoroughly settled that Ma ture finally avenges herself on man-, kind for their abuses of her bounties, and the penalty of a treeless region as seen to day in purtsvot North Ainca, which iu the days of the Carthageni- an power were among the , most pro ductive aud opulaut portions of. the theu known globe. lhetory ot Ua lo and the fis which he displayed in tlie Roma u Senate sounds like a ro mance, when one , reflects on the pres ent cliaracter of the region which pro duced them ; which was then full of blooming orchards, and purple vine yards, and spreading gardens, and stately palaces, and lordly villas; and which to-day is a waste . dotted over with rums and little better than a howling wilderness. In Hungary II i rough out .Austria aud Germany and Southern France, the dest ruction of timber is given as the cause of the disastrous floods which npw desolate many, of the fairest portions .of, Eu rope; aud without further illustration it may safely be set down as a recog nized lact that the preservation of our forests is a matter of vital importance to us all. The inexorable saw mill, which devours yhole, forests, has ta ken the place of the woodman's axe, and vast regions have been denuded of their timber in the. most reckless manner. But while the trees are cut down aud the very shrubs grubbed up for their roots, as in tbe case of the mountain, ivy, no one makes new plantations, and Nature is left to re pair the ravages of t man as best 'she may, , lie hi ml the saw mill there -arc the eyes of Argus, and these looking for ncw.liuhU tulevastate, have turn ed tln in-i lyts towards Virginia and Nirth Carolina. What has happen ed in Maine, for example, will hap pen hen-, unless some wise and whole smc laws are enacted, and as the Legislature of our lister Stale, is1 now iu session, we beg leave to suggest that the ieuee f forestry might be applied, in part at least, to the grand forests of the Old North- Stale; for without sonic wise protect um her woodlands will be swept away' with out any adequate provision for succes sors to thctVcV'w'hlch arc destroyed.
