They never injure ihe weakest female or the young est child. One box is a medicine chest suffic ing for a whole family. Suppose you have diarrhoea; nature is making a great effort to get rid of aome irritating matter in the stom ach or brfwels, A dose of Brand reth's Pills removes the matter and the disease is cured. In costiveness one good dose of Brandreth's Pills, fallowed by one pill every night for a week or two, make the human machinery run aa regular us clock work. In bad colds, where the pores of the skin are closed and the insen sible perspiration thrownupon the blood, pois oning the fountains of life and filling the nose, the throat and the lungs with choking mucus ; even Brandreth's Pills taken at night on an empty stomach, will restore the perspiration, break up the cold and purge away all the wa tery secretions that should have passed off by the skin. Diphtheria, a family disease and a most dangerous one. is almost immediately cured by one or two doses of Brandreth's Pills, aided by a gargle of lime water. Rluimatism, which comes from too much acidity or too much alka.inity of the system, requires noth ing but Brandreth's Pills and a few good sweats to make a perfect cure. It is marvelous how they purify the blood. After two doses, the effect is seen in brightness of the eyes and clearness of the skin. Ml pirn pies and eruptions vanish like magic under ihe influence of this purifying purgative. We cannot stop the march of time with any medi cine: but Brandreth's Pills will remove the excessive lime from the system and pdevent grey hair. They improve the sight and tone up the human body, so that the old man's eyes will be undimmed and his natural force una bated even after seventy years. A Dowu East Hermit. Twenty-five years is a long time or a man to live the life of a recluse. and yet this wa the fate of one who died the other day, who fled to the wilderness of Northern Maine and ived that period of time as a hermit. His name was William Cunningham, native of Washington in Knox county. In his youth he was eccen tric, like lathe Asa, and that trait of character followed him through life. When he prew up to manhood, like other humans he fell in love) and his love was reciprocated by as pretty a girl as was to be found in the town, and one of good parentage. It is said that t was a remarkable instance of devotion on both sides. She happen- a ed, however, to die suddenly, and it was her decease that completely upset hid. for eighteen mouths he led a secluded life, and then he disposed of his little proiKrty, went to Bangor. thence to Oldtown, where he did a little lumbering business, and finally brought tip in the region of Moose head Lake, where lie worked in the woods in winter, and on farms iu Sum mer. About ihe year 1848 he worked in the logging swamp near Cliestiucook Lake, and iu the Spring he felled some tiers on the shores of the lake on laud belonging to the State and built him a t amp. For thtee years he lived here, clearing up laud and and selling the products of the soil to the lumbermen. He was a large, muscular man, and, though posse si i g great physics) strength, he lacked energy and perseverance. Occaesion ally he would have his sprees. While absent, some one, as he supposes, set fire to hi- camp ami burned all his tools, clothing ami camp outfit. ' a This disaster had such a depress ing never fully recov- a? mi ml. another camp, and had a very uood loir house. He school hooks at a salary samel! iug like that named above. That is truth. But not the whole truth for the reason why the man worked in an inferior position was not because he graduated from college bat because his habits were bad. ile was an oc casional drunkard. In his subordi nate position he was safer and better off than he had ever been when work ing for himself. Colleges do not teach young men to buy cheap and sell dear. Educa tion is that which makes success worth having. It cannot impart the quality of mastership, which makes one man go forward and take the lead, and the want of which makes it far belter for most men to follow. In New York there is many of these wealthy ignorant men. whom unfortunately our youth are advised to imitate. As a class, they are well known to be both ridiculous, reckless and coarse iu 'speech and habits. They do not know what to do with themselves or with their money, un less it be to go grinding on, adding to their preposterous burthens. Some of them try to conquer ennui, and to dare themselves above the position to which their lack of education as signs them, by building beautiful palaces, or by making rare collections, of which they really appreciate noth ing but the cost. Others parade their iltleness in the harbors of the world rotcctcd by a flag to which their ives added no lustre. One of the absurd est, nay, one of he most threatening and terrible spectacles which our imperfect civili- zrtion affords, is an ignorant, common vulgar man, with millions at dollars at his command millions which spoil him, corrupt his relations and blast his children.
