A Hotel Fire, with a Guest Fatally
Burned
Charlotte. C. Feb 1, 1886.
Sunday morning at 8:30 0 clock fire!
was discovered in a room m the Char
lotte Hotel The fire alarm sounded,
and ivestigation showed that the bed on
which Alexander Heinowsky, a painter,
slept was on fire. He was badly burned
and died this morning from the effects
of the burns. The fire is supposed to
have originated from a cigar or fron
matches in his pocket. Three other
men in the same room were nearly suffo
cated by the smoke. Heinowsky was
a Russian, and had been living here
about a year.
: Put Them Out
The "Civil Service Humbug" will be
pretty certain: to tell on the Democrat
ic party in the First Congressional Dis
trict in the next election. We have
been reliably informed that there are
about three hundred lighthouse keep
ers and attendants in the district, rank
Republicans, holding on laughing in
their sleeves at the hungry Democrats.
These Democrats have labored long and
faithfully for the Democratic party,
and they were confident, taking a com
mon sense view of the matter, that
Democratic Success meant that Repub
lican partisan officials would walk the
plank of political retirement. But it
now appears to them that it meant on
ly the heads of departments were to be
changed, while their political opponents
right in their midst can defiantly shake
their fists in their faces. Ncbern

If Thomas J. Cluverius, the young
lawyer who is in jail under sentence of
death for the murder of Miss Fonnie
Lillian Madison, obtains a new trial
from the Court of Appeals, he will be
able under a new law to testify in his
own defence. The Legislature has iust
passed, and the Governor approved, a
bill which allows all criminals to testify
in tneir own behaii. Many prominent
lawyers believe that the Court of An-
peals will grant Cluverius a new trial,
borne of the most important witnesses
for the prosecution in this case are
dead or out of the State, and in tbe
event the prisoner obtains a new trial
doubts are felt about his being con
victed again.
