The skin being washed .and dried is put on the stretch with two fingers of the left hand, and a drop or carbolic acid is applied-exactly over the patch. When it dries the operation is com pleted. The skin becomes white, and the slight sensation of burning disap pears in a few minutes. The Slanderer. There is no more-'cowardlv assassin that walks the earth than the charac ter murderer the slimy and slander ous tongued gossiper, whose delight it is to repeat everv idle word that is whispered in their ear to spew out and enlarge upon to ine nrsi unenwg friend they meet the Iastest "what they say ; the venomous and viperous heart- ed scandal monger whose business it is i i 1 1 . i i i to tarnish the good name and traduce the character of their fJlow man, whether by direct charge or insinuation. With a knowing wink and a signifi cant shake of the head, they are ever ready to peddle the "news about, but always with a soft reminder not to say I told you so.'1 'These pious hypocrites infest every Community,, and ply their nefarious practice of character smirch ing wherever they go. Heaven pity such miserable wretches as these, and while this sort of a character calls for condemnation of the severest kind, let us rather pity them and leave them alone tm the hands of a Higher Power before whose judgment their blackened and puny souls must some day be call ed tsp account. He who undertakes to run down a slander shows himse wanting in good judgment; but he who lives it down proves a character invul nerable to the attacks of the thought - less and malicious. Ex. How Birds Fly. In a paper recently -read before the American Association for the Advance ment of Science, at Buffalo, I. Lancas ter gave some insight into the means by which soaring birds keep themselves suspended motionless in mid-air. He sjH'iit five years on the Gulf coast of Florida observing the flight of birds. His method was to .assume a dress painted to resemble a pine bough, and taking up his position in a tree top watch the birds for hours together. This is one of the things he saw:'The gannet, when a tree top near their breeding places was occupied, would float within a foutof my fnceaS rigidly immovable as a board. They have alighted on my head with their toes in my mouth. They would weigh as much as eight pounds, with about four or five square feet of wing surface. A stiff breeze was required to float them if they remained in one place. They seemed to sleep, as their eyes were closed for an hour at a time. They were in a position of rterfect equilib rium. I have gently pushed them with a stick in various direct ions while they were thus balanced, and any effort at all would move them in auy direction until they would waken, which they were not long in doing. The position of the wings of all birds while in the act of soaring was on an incline, high est in frout. The -heavier "the bird the more the inclination. These gannets would float at an angle of about fifteen degrees with the horizontal. The frigate birds at very low inclination, often seemingly nearly level; but all birds had the power of varvinjr their inclines I to suit their purposes. Paste this in your Scrap Book. One quart of flour weighs one pound. A tablespoonful of salt will weigh about one ounce. A pint of water or milk will weigh about one pound. About GO drops of thin liquid will fill a common size teaspoon. One pint of molasses will weigh one and a quarter pounds. Four tablespoon fuls. of hitlf a gill, will rill a common sized wind glass. Three teaspoonfuls of baking pow der should weigh an ounce. Four wine glasses will fill a half pint measure, a common tumbler, or a large coffee cup. Ten eggs usually weigh one pound liefore they are broken. Eight large ones will weigh one pound. Mexico. Gen. Jackson, Ex-Minister to Mexi co, says: "The scenery of Mexico ex ceeds anything in the world that has ever come under my observation, either on this continent or in Europe. The City of Mexico is 7,400 feet above the level of the sea. It is in what is called the country. Next to it towards the Gulf, is the temperate country, and from there one passes into the hot country. The country about Jalapa was pronounced by Humbolt the gard en soot of the world. A Short Biography of the Oyster. Baltimore American. The oyster is again in our midst. The oyster is a good thing to have in our midst. It creates a feeling or com fort and content, and answers com pletely the old question as to whether or not life is worth living. There may be better aquatic things than the oys ter, but their names are not known. The gentle bivale is the very essence of goodness. The oyster is mankind's friend. It is as modest of it is usefulness. In its youthful days it affixes itself to an object and stays there until compelled to leave. It does not visit or gad about, or go on excursions. It sticks closer to its perch than a politician does to a sinecure. All it does is to be there and get fat As the tides pass by it opens its mouth and takes in whatever of nutriment the current brings it. It is the picture of otinmatm dignitute. or months and months it stores away the succu lence of the salted seas. Then some j frosty morning it jumps into a dredge and leaves its watery home. It comes to the city, takes up its residence in the raw box and when the sable gentleman with a knife theaten to cut his throat. it comys out of its shell, crawls upon the of a fork and affier ( through r yawning cavern, takes a hist, ' di mto s0me human depth from which no traveler returns. Its little life is gone, but the man who takes it utters a benediction, and calls for an other half dozen. Women and Money. Every girl who is entirely dependent on her nude relations a position which, considering all the tips and downs of life, the sooner she gets out of the better ought by the time she is old enough to possess any money to know exactly how much she has, where it is invested and what it ought yearly J to bring in. By this time also she should have acquired some knowledge of busi ness Bank business, referring to checks, dividends and so on and as much of ordinary business as she can. To her infromation of a practical kind never comes amiss, especially the three & rules, which have very rare ex- ception. No investment of over five per cent is really safe; trust no one with your money without security, which ought to be as strict between the nearest and dearest friends aa between strangers, and, lastly, keep all your affairs from day to day in sis accu rate order as if yon had to die tomor row. Happier than the lot of many married women is that of the "unappropriated blessings," as 1 have heard an old maid called who has her money, more or less, in her own hands, ami can use it as she chooses, generously or wisely, without asking anybody's leave and being ac countable for it to no one. But then she must have learned from her youth upward how to use it ; she must not spare any amount of trouble in the using of it, and she must console her self for many a lonely regret we are but human, all of us with the thought that she has been t lusted to be a steward of the Great Master. Such an old maid often does as much good in her gener ation as twenty married women -timore Shh. My answer to the question, how was I educated, ends where it began : I had the right mother.
