He had asked a well known, shipbuilder to assist him in ar riving at the power that must be exert ed by a large whale in order to acquire a specd of twelve miles in an hour. They measured a large whale recently stranded at Longuiddry. It was eighty feet long, weighed about seventy-four tons, and had a tail of eighteen to twenty feet across the extreme edges of its flanges. With these data it was calculated that such a whale, in order to attain a sjecd of twelve miles an hour, would require to exercise a pro pelling force of 14o horse-power. rttnek-ton. the eonntv scat of Rooks twunty, Kansas, a thrifty wide awake city tf the second class, is carving its way, wy a special to the New York Herald, W national fame by the novel manner in whir it is treating the new municipal fcttflfrace law. General Johnston will be invited to deliver the address when this monument to the memory of the men killed in his last battle is unveiled. It is very probable that he will accept the invitation. L, April C Seldom was there such a lively interest shown m an election as that which was mani fested in this city and throughout the state to-day. Full reports from all the city this evening show that Davn, the Democrat i: nominee for Governor, has been electeddjy a majority of 2,0(30. It is thought from returns thus far received from the various towns that Davis will have at least 2,000 majority in the whole State. Some towns are yet to hear from, but the vote is so close that it will probably not reduce Davis' majority. At a late hoar to-night indications are that the entire Democratic general ticket hits been elected. The new Leg islature will be change! considerably, although the Republicans will no doubt have a majority. The Democrats are jubilant in this city to-night, and large crowds throng the newspaper, tel egraph and other downtown offices. Honhres are blazing in all parts of the city ground which Democrats deliri ous with joy are dancing like madmen. The glorious victory is also being cele- hrated fu si lads of skyrockets and bursting .aerial bombs, each of which drops myriads of bright Democratic stars. Old Jacksonian Democrats who year after year have walked to the polls and vainly voted for their candi date, to-night stand on the street cor nel's eagerly discussing their triumph of to-day. would dress himself, get his meals, write his letters, and in fact do almost anything that any man with two arms could do. lkteton 1 ranscrq.
