A sad accident occurred at Detroit, Mich., Dec. 20, in Tilden public school, where thirty children, dressed in in flammable stuff, were rehearsing for a Christmas cantata. A candle in the hand of one of them came in contact with one of the dresses, and before the flames could.be arrested, 10 of them were badly burned; two fatally, three pthers so badly they will die, and 11 others seriously. A man near Lynchburg shot and seriously wounded his son-in-law. Immediately after, he shot and killed himself, supposing, it is thought, he had killed his son-in-law. - A very similar case occurred in this county some years years ago: Forest Monroe shot and wounded his son-in- law, and immediately afterward got bis razor and cut h)s own throat, be- lieving, no doubt, that lie had killed him,, ... The are patent right bee-hive agents working up Cabarrus eonnty. for what it is worth as we learn. A man who has more money than he has use for, may as well spend it on patent bee-hives as on lottery tickets, or any other uncertain thing: but anv onp not in tn fi. condition had better keep his money and let the bee-hive pass -by him. A contemporary in rebukinsr a boast ful Maine farmer for his brag of raising 738 bushels of Irish potatoes on one acre of ground, refers to the fact that once in AsUeville within the corporate limits, on thesame area raised n 00 bushels. That was the fact, but "alas for the rarity" of it. It was never done but onee, neither was Mr. Woodfin's feat of raisin tr 136 bushels of corn to tho acre ever repeated. The more shame for it; what man has done, uuui may do, and instead of an average of 80 or 90 bushels of one crop, and 12r 2-Lon the other, the averasre may be made every year to approximate those large numbers which stand on rec ord to amaze or to encouragc--iu what ever spirit they aro looked on.AsJieville Vdtxen. i The Citizen may be correct in stat ing that lMr. WoodfiVs feat ef rais ing 136 bushels of cm to1 the acre," &cM but we have for years been claim ing the result of Mr. W's. experiment as excelling anything in the South, and have uniformly -stated it at 1GS bush els to the acre. We get our impression from the announcement made at the time, find don't likcrto be corrected. Growth of towns, building factories, building and extending railroads, are every day announcements in news papers. Will some one rise up and show us a similar development and im provement of the farming interests of the country ? From various sources of information, the farms of the country are going down about in the same ra tior The New England farms are being abandoned, and. the census re ports show a steady decline in the value of farm properties in the old States North. The western and many of the southern farms are shingled over with mortgages, and there is a general feeling that farming does not pay. City improvement, meantime, is all the rage. How long can it be so if the farming interests of the country continue to decline? These are questions which must ul timately force themselves to the sur face, and capital and enterprise going into railroads, factories and city ini provements will be obliged to pause and consider them. The South has not found a friend at court in the person of Speaker Heed. He appears to hold a southern republican in as little favor as he would a southern democrat. Out of fifty-six chairman ships of committees, theVhole Soutb trets inn one, urower, of North Carolina. A more equitable distribution would have found a place for Mr. Ewarts, certainly a strong and useful party man, and abun dantly capable. Wc will leave the re publicans to gnash their own teeth: we do not enter into their griefs. But the southern republicans have learned by this time of how little account they are in their own household. Ashcrille Cili- zea.
