The dispatch was us follows: "Mr. Pierce, of Tennessee, introduc ed in the House to-dav a resolution instructing the Comnuttte on Wiu s and Means to report to the House by Alouduy, January 5t!i, a bill to estab lish a system of Sub-Treasuncs (tht Alliance bill) and making the bill ii tMciai order from January 12th, until it.is uisposed of. The resolution was refeiTeu to the Committee on Rules." Somebody is getting uneasy up about Wastitntoii City. Keep the ballfiiov- and ennobling characteristics of a great people. While we have no reason to feel proud of North Carolina, us she is what her poople have made her, yet there is an important matter that ha- been neglected too long neglected. That this matter has not been agitate 1 by the press, that the people have liol sought to study and that our legisla tures have not provided a rmedy for the existing evil, may be due to the ab sorbing interest manifested in other! matters which were thought to be ol vital importance to the State and our people. So far as this table goes it shows that 19 per cent, only of the railroad property in this State is taxed. It was my purpose to make a complete list of all the active railroad capital acta, illy employed within the Stale, but in the absence of official reports of many of the smaller roads as to their monetary operations this is at this time impossible. However, after a complete statement shall have Wen ma ie it is my opinion that the aggregate will be more than 50 million dolUri, Our Hon. State Auditor shows the "net tax val uation" of rill the roads to be $10,003,6S2.05 or about 20 per cent. It is true- some measures have been adopted to secure tax from the three roads marked "blank" above. Allowi.ig a very li be rat return from these roads, it will not increase the tax value of the roads to more than 25 per cent. The .State of New Jersev derives a revenue from the railroads on a basis of 75 per cent, of the capital stock and bonded indebtedness. This against 25 percent in N C. rhen we consider that the average mile of road in N. J is assessed at 897,000 as compared with a possible 85,000 in this State, the v.istness of this statement at once becomes more apparent. How raanv North Carolinians knew that we hnda road in our State worth $94,44S to the mile? This road is taxed $10,190 to the mile, or less than 11 per cent. Official report from this line show that in "1888 it was worth $77,413; in 1SS9. 894.448. or an increase of $17,035 to the mile in 12 months. Another conspicuous example is that of the . &.W. it i carrying an indebtedness to the extent of $52,932 to the rude, yet they made the magnanimous offer to the In vest ig ttiug Committee that the tax be assessed $8,000 to the mile?
