Corre?wiifJence of the ali.limnn.
ator Gorman s Presidential looni,
which has been carefullv nursed for
some time by some of the; Democrats
in tJongre-ss has grown , vonderfully
ssince the publication of Mr. Cleveland's
anti-free coinage letter. Four-fifths
of the Democrats in both House and
Seriate have stated their belief that
Mr. Cleveland's nomination is an im-
IM'i'- 1 !
po?ioimy now, ana in looKing over
(he field for a successor many of them
think that Gorman is the iuaii. Air.
Gorman voteil for the Vest free coin
age bill, which recently passed the
Senate, but those who know him best
say that his object in dojug so was not
to secure free coinage, to which he is
in reality opposed, but to put the , Re
publicans in a hole. However that
may be he is now counted as a friend
of free coinage and it is among the
Democratic free coinage men that he
has his backing- for the Presidential
nomination.
J'he silver men recognizing that it
will now be next to impossible to se
cure th passage of thu Vest free coin
age bill in the Uouse even if the com
mittee keeps its promise and reports it
back to the House this week, have had
a new bill introduced in the House
providing for the free coinage of silver
from American mines, but the session
is so near its cIosh that there is little
probability of this new bjll being acted
upon.
Sympathizers with the Farmers' Al
liance and kindred movements are un
der the impression that Mr. Cleveland's
letter will prove a powerful "factor .in
determining the fate of the Alliance
or third party- movement. If Mr.
Cleveland can dominate the IV'mocrat
ic party and get hfmsejf nominated en
a plattorin with a gold financial plank,
as some of the longest headed politi
cians Jiere think he can, and the Re
publicans put a similar plank in their
national platform, as they are certain
to do, it is behe-red that a thud parts
favoring tree coinage of silver will be
the result, f lie South is unquestion
ably, in tivor of the free coinage' of
silver, hot the imnortaut probTem is
can it be depended upon, in the face of
the negro qucslibn, which has been
the ruling one im that section for
twenty-five years, to support a thin
party. Take it all in all the Oresen
political situation is a very, interestino'
one to the i thoughtful student; and
predictions at this time are at best bu
guesses.
