A Change Needed- There is a good deal of complaint about the schedule for the . southbound mixed train on the A. T. & O. road. It is billed to leave Stalesville at 12:30" p. m. The westbound mail on the W. N. C. leaves Salisbury at 12:23. Frequent ly passengers wish to go down the A, T. & O., and reach Statesville just about 40 minutes too late. ' If the mixed train would leave Statesyille say one hour la ter it would be more convenient, and we can't see that itwould make any ditrer: euce to the people along .the line. - We hope that the authorities will make this slight change for the travelling public. " ' Correspondence of the Watchman. And still it rains. This morning the trees are bending to the ground freighted with ice. Business is exceedingly dull at this time. Almost every man, woman and child is sick with grippe. Never have 1 known-so.much sickness in Stat es ville and the surrounding country. Some are very sick indeed, others not so bad. Almost every morntng new cases of the prevailing disease are reported, and we wonder when it will cease. t: , tjinee myjast, several of. our citizens have passed the Jordan of death. Mrs. Prudie Davidson was buried last Sunday, She died ou Friday night of pneumonia, having been sick only two days. .-Key. D. G.. Caldwell conducted the -funeral service. Mr. Wilson Thompson, aged about 57 years, died of the same disease Sunday last, aud was laid to rest at Concord church, six miles west of this place, yes terday. A daughter of Mrs. Jas. Roueehe died Sunday morning of the same disease. Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong, husband and wife, were buried Sunday evening last at Snow; Creek church, in the northern por tion of this county. , We earnestly trust that those of our citizens who aro-at this writing very sick may speedily rceove: and be permitted to nil their places again. The county commissioners were in ses sidjrl yesterday: 'The principal part of the business transacted was"pass',lg- the pauper claims. This item' of expenses is increasing in this county, it being now about $700 per quarter. Hpw true Christ's words, "Ihe poor ye have with you always." Bro. S, Otho Wilson spoke here yester day. The weather being unfavorable and the roiids 'almost bottomless, the crowd was small.. As it was, he hud an audience of about forty. His speech was entertaining and instructive, and mo doubt was of benefit to many who heard it. - W. W. Turner, the business agent of the county Alliance, is now busy order ing and delivering fertilizer. The pros pects now are favorable for his doing a large business in that line.
