Most of his converts are adults old hardened sinners. He uses a few stories ns illustrations but does not seek to excite his audience in any way. His earnestness and famil iarity with the Scriptures are his best weapons. He sometimes makes rash re mavks, but no man is pe;feet. Tuesday night whjeu services closed all persons who endorsed the meetin" were asked to rise to their feet. The en tire audience stood up. A large crowd went to the depot Tues day night to see Mr, and Mrs. Fife off. The time at the depot was spent in sing ing songs of praise and iu ryayer. Mr. Fife's last words as the train pulled out were, "I will meet you in the great city." No such scenes were ever witnessed in any religious meeting here. The meet ing has done much good. Perhaps some will fall, but it will not be Mr. Fife's fault. He did his duty. ThGsewhopro fessed will be responsible for their own shortcomings. During the meeting many places of business were closed. On Tuesday the car shop3 and the Salisbury cotton mills shut down so that the operatives could attend each service. Its a good thing for pepple to mix to gether, see antb be seen. j From a business standpoint the town coiuld well afford to undertake it. Let's have it. A Handsome (iii'l. Mr. Edwin Shaver, othis city, who is a Presbyterian, has bee.ii very kind to ihe Baptist1 congregation in this city. Lust week. he made them a present of a beautiful lot , near t he church on which to build a parsonage. We understand that it will be built within the next few nionths.. .This gift is highly appreciated by tlie congregation and the members and pastor are much ejicouraged. Mr. Shaver is noted jfor his kind deeds. Within t he past fic months he has given the Baptist church ahoiut $75 in cash iii addition to the lot. It Cbscd Tit?s(lar Night Nearly 200 Converted The Y. 21. C. A. Make Him a present .f More Than S00 The Result. Mr. Fife closed a grand meeting here Tuestlay night. This meeting 'was suc cessful beyond all expectation. The meeting had been going on night and day for ten days. One hundred and seventy-six gave in their names and will join the various chuiches. More, than $000 was raised and presented to the eyangelist. Mr. Fife left Tuesday night for Char7 lotte, from which place he goes to Cleve land Springs where he will remain until May 17th when he goes to Spartanburg, S. C, to begin his next meeting. The memlers of nearly all the churches took part in the meeting. Several pas tors were workers at every service. Mr. Billhorn led the singing ami was assisted by Miss Linda Rumple on an organ and Prof. E, B. Neave and his cornet. Great crowds attended the meeting everv nignt. ntanuuig room was at a premium. The tabernacle was nearly full at each day service. 31 r. Fife is intensely earnest. He is not an orator. He is a man ofcommandr ing preseirce and posesses sufficient firm ness to keep a large audience well under control. In audition to the 176 converts, many old church members were. stirred up and backsliders reclaimed. Manvi men gave him their hand and promised never to enter a barroom or play cafds again. Dozens of young men and ladieis promised to quit dancing. ; ' On lat Sunday at 4 o'clock la meeting for men was held. This did a vast a.r.ount of good and many old sinners wereleeply affected. On Saturday morDmtg the subject of discourse was for giveness. After the service; Mr. Fife a-ked all who were at enmity: to go to e tch. other and make friends; Perhaps two dozen persons did so. If there bad Bill bought all still the darkey ville. He paid $70,00 for liis farm and expects to spend $5,000,003 on improve ments. He is I having the mountains leveled down. J le can't stand the idea of wealing telegraph pole climbers when digging potatoes. Bill has a good deal f.f'i iycr bottom on the French Broad, He is raising 11 nvers and other truck. An old darkey is giving .the millionaire a good deal of trouble. This negro had ten acres ot grounui anct reiuseu 10 &cu n. the land around it, but ives, '-moves and has his cabin right in the midst of Bill's posses sions. Mr. Vatfderbilt has offered him $3,000 for the ten acres, but he wants $30,000 $3, 000 :jn acre. Yander-bilt wanted to know what kind of a fellow Jim C ok is. We don't know whether he wants to adopt him or not. Mr. Yandcrbjilt subscribed for the Watchman'. ila is going to join the Alliance and beja better cRuen as soon as he gets his farm in shape. We forgot to mention that Bill Nye is very much concerned about his moun tain neighbors.! He thinks they work their cows too much.
