Mr. Editor: You n-ver saw such
a mess as the peop'e's parly fellow-i
have got into down here in the decla
ration of independence county. Now
!o show you ti:e condition of the, peo
ples party let us Illustrate. When 1
was a boy we played a gune that was
known as '"btill pen." We divuled the
force,, say 10 on a side, we selected our
around something like a baseball dia
mond only not so large; we cast lots
for the comer, the cireual had five cor
ners, we put five boys on the corners
at a time, the -other "ten went into the
pen; we used a rubber ball whicbJwd
to be passed all nronnd the pen to
male if hot, then the next thing was
to hit One of the bulls in the pen and
when he was hit the cornermen all
took to thu woods- ff the hit bull
failed to hit a cornerman as he run he
was out for. that game; if the corner
man was hit that put him out. for that
iiame. It continued until one fci ie oc the
other was out and "that decide-d the
aule. WeU the fun generally com
ilienced in 'W' wlien tbecorner
nien were all out but -two, then the
bulls .vould run fronf one corner to
the other as the hall passed from one
to the other. Now the democrats have
corners, so Mr. J-oh nsrtou says, - and
they are down to two and the people's
parly fellows are running, from one
side to i he other on papers, all leading
papers. List Saturday one of them
aid the democrats- waauld put up. fi
ticket that would mop 'up 'the earth
with the republicans, Weaverites and
alltho pestiferous enemies of the dem
ocrats. The b.dl passed and the hull
run to tKe other side. We asked Mr
JohnstoH-vhat pestiferous was and lit
said he Jhought h - was. a potato
bug. In the evening another lcadim?
paper sail the mopers were nominated.
the ball was passed and tl:e bulls run
to the other si;e or; thepen,thev pa-sed
the ball and si:id the bulls and repub
licans had iouud, that run the bulls t
the other side or tlie pen, then they
said the republican party had all gon
to the demoenrtie, party, then as the
ball was passed the bulls run again
Then one of the leading papers Sair
there wa noon- in the people's party
out tne slums of tne countrv. inen
ihe bulls hurdled up in the middle 'of
the pen, and then Matt Hansom cairTe
down and thev put him p one corner
He made two balls, one'' of them out of
the remnant o the force bill and the
other out of the silver bill and threw
them at tbe bulls but missed, he then
wadded up-his old tariff bill and threw
that at the hurdle in the middle of th
pen and he missed the bulls .again'
They have got so" contrary" that they
stand hurdled up in the middle of the
pen and the cornermen are throwing
mud balls of the dirtiest quality a
them. Some of them are so .dirty tha
they would not stick to a hog pen or a
soap factory if they were to hit them
broadside. The bulls -are going lo get
the i'oruers aiuL then there will be a
hurdle. . a

A Wonderful Clock.
Japan possesses a wonderful fnne

feet wide and five feet long, represent
ing a noonday landscape of great
beauty. In the foreground pliim and
cherry trees and rich plants appear in
full bloom; in the rear is seen a hill,
gradual in ascent, from which appar
ently flows a cascade, admirably imi
tated in crystal, f'rom thjs point a
thread-like stream meanders, encircling
rocks and islands in its windings, and
finally losing it in a far-off stretchof
woodland. In a miniature sky - a
golden sun turns on a silver r wive,
striking the hours mi silver gongs as it
passes. Each hour is marked on the
frame hy a creeping tortoise1, which
serves the place of a h;'nd, A bird of
