ILampson, returned musior; ary from Athens Greece, delivered two excellent lectures on foreign missions in the Presbyterian church last Sunday morning aid evening. Mr. Sampson is a fluent and able speaker,, and speaks from -experience and obervation, having been in Greece and in different parts of the foreign field fur-the last fifteen years. He is an earnest, zealous worker, and one who has done great and lasting good for the-jioble cause for which he is labor- lug. Last Friday morning about 8 o'clock a negro named Johnsou Lloyd, of Concord, in attempting to steal a ride on a freight train, was serhnisly if not" fa ally wound ed, lie was standing at the crossing near Hon. John 8. Henderson's, and as the train was passing, caught hold of one of the iron rods under the car. The wheels of the cur passed over his right leg, crushing it from the knee to the foot ; t . .. aim leaving it Hanging Dy a smalt piece of flesh; his skull was also crushed. DrV Whitehead and W. W. Statesvilleis no slow town by any means, and hi connection wuh her other first class enterprises -she has the deserved reputation of ; having the best weekl newspaper in the State, which fact is due to her patriotic citizenh' pride in uuitidly sustaining nil business enterprises which are likely to prove beneficial to the town aud community. Many of the towns of our State would be better otl'if their citi zens were imbued with the same spirii of enterprise that is u prominent feature in those of our sister town. They deserve to reap abundant prosperity. Last Suiui duiy niht about 10:30 o'clock the store house of Mr. Taylor Fry, on Factory hill, vas discovered to be 011 fire. The alarm wus given and-a large crowd qulekty cutteettdf -v the fire, which had probabfy beenburiiing unob served for nearly an hourptead rapidly, and the building was a- sheef o.' f ame in a very few minutes alter being discovered dn fire. Fed by combustiblesJii the store, and fanned by a slight breeze, the flames were quickly transmitted to Mr. Fry's dwelling, which stood at a distance of oujy a few feet from the burning buil ding. This also was completely' envel oped in ft.imes, before the fire companies from towu arrived. In a few minutes af ter this, streams of water were pouring on the burning dwelling from hose at tached to a hydrant standing neur the new factory building, and soon the flames were under full' control. St. Paul's Epis copal Chapel and Mr. J. M. Odell's dwelling were both in great danger, and would have burned if the tire companies had been 15 minutes later. Ihe Chapel was considerably scorched, aud damaged otherwise. Mrs. Fry, who was very sick at the time of the lire, was carried to MrsMyrick's near by. It was feared that excitement would have a serious effect upon her, but she is reported to be getting along very well since the fire The insurance on the property araouuts to $1,500. This does nut cover, the loss, but will be a great help to Mr. Fry. He has our deepest sympathy in all his troubles. , Salisbury Bicyjjle Club. ; The bicyclists of Salisbury' met Monday night and organized a club .to be known as the Salisbury BicveVe Clab.
