If the1 United States Supreme Courtjaccordmg to Judge Emory SpeelV;of Georgia, amounts to anybiiingjdown here, there would be some suits for damage- against tha town of Salisbury for peonage. He says the placing. of men on a County chain gang for offenses not amounting to crime is peon age with the city ordinances and courts to the contrary notwithstanding. Judge Boyd, during last week's session of Federal Court at Greensboro, fined a young man of Kernersville $250 for selling com mon curs for $20 to $60, having advertised them a? dogs of su perior pedigrees. The pedigree part t of the transaction is what .got him into trouble, the price of the cur being of no consideration. Judging by the neighborhood rows, newspaper space given and the great time devoted to discussing dog-laws by the legislature, any old cur ought to bring several times the price asked by the Kerners ville man: Judge Boyd should be careful, there are some smoking volcanoes in existence yet. The Opening Services of the New Baptist Church. The first service and probably the largest that may be held ther for some time, was held in th new Baptist church Sunday. The morning service was held by th pastor, Rev. W. H. Rich. Th afternoon service began at 2:80 and was participated in by all Protestant denominations in the city and a number of ex-pastors of the church, consisting of Revs. N. S. Jones and M. E, Parrish. Revs. J. H. Wilson, of St. John's Lutheran church, Rowe, of the First Methodist church, and Dut tera, of Faith Reform church participated in the exercise. Between $1,200-' and $1,500 were raised to reduce th-) church debt. The services were a success in ev ery respect, and great enthusiasm was, aroused. The building is one of the handsomest in the city and the Baptists deserves great credit for the perseverance with which they have worked' and the success attained.
