B. Summersett, secretary and treasurer both of Salisbury. R. M. Pendleton, secretary of Salisbury Typographical Union", is again on the sick list. He has the best wishes of the boys for an early recovery. Last Friday our city wls full of excursionists, mostly colored. A train from Norfolk, Va., brought .one contingent, and a train from Kershaw, S. C, brought the otner. They struck it right for watermel ons, as the stores were well sup plied with them. Charles T. Woolen, secretary of the University of North Carolina, was here last week in the interest of that institution. The small building that stood opposite the Salisbury passenger depot, formerly used by the local claim, agent, has been moved to East Spencar to be ued for the same purpose there by the South ern's agent. TheScalpers' picnic came off ,ac - cording to program, at Grant's creek last Friday, Editor Julian, of the Post, made an addiess to the Scalpers, and we suppose it was replete with instructions as to the most approved method of hypnotizing the victim with sweet phrases while he is being scalped. The occasion was enjoved, despite the showery weather. , Rev. H. A. McCullough, of Mt. Pleasantr delivered the principal address at the Lutheran mission ary meeting held at Zeb last Sun day. ' THE NEW BRIDGE AMD NEW DEPOT. Steel Bridge for tanks Street Stopped Building of the New Depot Assured. Mayor Boyden, having returned from another conference with Mr. Ackert in reference to the Inniss streofi bridge and the new depot, says : "I am nssured that the steel bridge which is ta be placed across the North Carolina railroad on Inniss street has already been shipped, and will be in course of construction within a few days. A depot is absolutely certain, and engineers were here last week mak ing an examination with reference to thd most suitable site." The following petition in regard to the site of the new depot has, we are informed, been signed by a great majority of our business men and citizens : "Wp, the undersigned merchants and citizens of Salisbury, desire to express our wishes relative to the location of the new depot for this .city. "We think it should be located at its present site, as it will be much more convenient for the cit izens of the town as well as the travelling public." These petitions will be sent. to Washington at an early date. m " Dog Meat at a Discount. Go to now, ye dogs without li cense to roam I Tuck your tails ana take to the wood??, for vour j j quondam friend and admirer is on your trail with blood in his eye. Clref Miller has issued orders to his subordinates to slay the un tagged dogs and spare not, and in. obedience to his command Capt. Parker and others of the police fore have sfain quite a number of those homeless animals. Those not mad have a right to get mad at such treatment, it may be; but it is better to slay ail the dogs, re gardlees of breed, than have one person die the horrible death pro duced by hydrophobia. An ad mirer of dogs once said he did not want to go to heaven if dogs were not admitted there; but it is very ptobable he did not say this du ring dogdays. Ordnation at the Episcopal Church. At the Episcopal church Sunday two young men were ordained for the diaconate according to the sol emn and impressive cerbmony of that Church, Bishop Cheshire and Revs. Owens and Bost participat ing in the ordination. The young men ordained were Messrs. F, W. R. Arthurs, of Troutmans, and L. H Hoover, of Thomasville. Rev. Bost preached the ordination ser mon, taking for his text, "Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain." The scene was an impressive one throughout, and was witnes?sed by a large congregation. i Mad Dog" Excitement. Last Friday there was great ex citement about noontide down in the neighborhood of the -courthouse, owing to a chase by the po lice after a dog supposed to have hydrophobia, which was finally slain.. Some days ago the little daugh ter of W. J. Morton, of Chestnut Hill, was supposed to have been bitten on the lip by a pet dog that two days afterward showed symp toms of madnes. It is possible that the cut on the child's lip was not made by the dog, but Mr. Mor ton means to take no chance, and will have the madstone applied to the wound. Successful Burglars. The residence of A. M. Loflin, on Chestnut Hill, was entered at a late hour Sunday night and $165 stolen therefrom. Among the sto len money were three $20 gold pieces, one being marked, with a cross. The matter was reported to the officers, but no clue has yet been found of the burglars. SPENCER NEWS. Appropriations Marked Out for Improve ments. ' The graded-school board expects soon to enter into a contract for the erection this fall of a hand some and commodious brick school house. Plucky Mrs. Trexler. An unknown negro attempted last Wednesday night to enter the residence of S. J. Porch in East Spencer, and was detected in the act by Mrs. Charles Irexier, a neignnor, wno got' ner ntue gun, went out and with it persuaded the woula-be burglar to stand still until an officer came and took the negro in charge. After his arrest the negro admitted that he had attempted to enter the same house the night before. It may be this negro is one of the lot of striped road hands who have escaped lately. M'lSCellany. G. W. Connell, administrator for the estate of Harold Crowell, who was killed last June at the Spencer shops while at work, has brought suit against the Southern for $25,000 damages. - W. B.
