ized a city improvement and de

the good things she is offering as
an inducement to manufacturers,
is a tax rate of 25c on the hundred
dollars. 4- of one Der cent. This

is indeed a remarkably low rate,
and. like a number of other
smaller towns that are crowded
with factories and industrial on
terprises, this item will be a con
siderable inducement in securing
such institutions. The wise town
will see to it that this figure is
not materially increased. The
town that is everlastingly seeking
an opportunity to lay on some
additional tax. is acting with the
same discretion the fellow did
who killed the goose that laid the
golden egg. '

WicDniNGTON. Mrs. A. L.-, o
Concord, died at the Whitehead-
Stokes sanatorium Friday night.
Mrs. Weddington was brought
here a few days before for treat
ment but it was an useless task as
there was no hope of her recovery.
She was a wife of only one year
and a mother of only jtwo weeks.
Her remains were shipped t' Con
cord Saturday where the inter
ment took place,
Maunby, The six-months old
child of Mr. and Mrs. Sidnev
Mauney, who have been living at
Old Fort for the past two years,
died here Monday night, shortly
after reaching Salisbury. The
child had pneumouia and was
brought here for treatment, but
too late. The remains were taken
to Gold Hill, Mr. Mauney's old
home, where the interment will
take place to-day,

young man who was so badlv in
jured between some cars, at Spen
cer Saturday one week ago. From J
the time he was injured theM was
no hopes of his recovery, but he
lingered till Wednesday morning
when hettied. Mr. Grub was just
17 years of age and an orphan.
He was a young man of many good
traits and though he had been at
the shops only a short time, he
had made ,many warm friends,
who with his relatives will learn
with sorrow of his untimely end.
His remains were taken-to Jerusa
lem, Davie county, where the fun
era services were conducted and
the interment was made Thursday,
