The place for the annual picnic of the employes of the Southern shops at Spencer has been changed from Danville to Winston-Salem. The date May 5th, remains the same. j St, John's Lutheran church, of Cabarrus county; which was to en tertain the Lutheran Synod, but had found it inconvenient to do so, has reconsidered! the matter and now desires the Synod to meet with that congregation, and it has been decided to accept the invita tion. The meeting will be held Wednesday. May 2nd. Whitehead Kluttz, Esq., has ac cepted an invitation to deliver a literary addsess at the commence ment exercise of Lenoir College in May. Mr. Kluttz is much in de mand as an orator. Our people will have an opportunity to hear him quite often during the coming campaign. Fine Corn. J. M. Proctor was in the city Monday and had with him some samples of his extra large and prolific corn. He had four storks from' two hills, on esch stork was three large ears. Mr- Proctor is selling the seed from this corn and gives special directions for raising it. ' . UILLERTOWN. April 7. The farmers around here are kicking on every side along now. We are informed that there will be a picnic at Bringle's ferry on Easter Monday. Every! body is invited to come. On Saturday night, March 31st, there was a candy supper given at Jos. A. Miller's i A very large crowd was present and a nice time is reported by all. Wasn't it Mat? Munford Parker, who has a po sition at Granite Quarry, spent a few days at home the other week, but has now returned, to work. The Sunday School of Luther's E. L. church was re-organized on Sunday of the 1st. A very large crowd was present. Uncle Josh hopes they will continue the good work. Mrs. Betty Kirk had a wood sa wing and barn raising a few day 8 ago. Mrs. L. W, Miller is still improv ing. i Mrs. Betsey Taylor, of this com munity, died last Tuesday night after a long illness of dropsy. She pas about 71 years of age. Mrs. Taylor leaves a number of children, grandchildren and friends to mourn her departure. She joined the Lutheran church in early life and. remained a mem ber of the same to the last. The re mains were interred in Luther's E. L. church cemetery, Rev. C. R. Pless officiating. Bev . Pless preached a very touching and beautiful sermon over the remains. C.J. Miller and C. M. . C rowel 1 attended the M. E. Conference at Concord a few weeks ago. We hope they enjoyed their trip very much. There will be communion ser vices held at Luther's church on the fourth Sunday of, April, at eleven o'clock, and also prepar atory services on Saturday before at eleven o'clock. The board of county commis sioners met in regular monthly session Monday, April 2nd, and transacted considerable business. The jurors were drawn for the May term of court. Mayor Boyden on behalf of the board of aldermen asked that the commissioners do some work on the Mocksville road near the city limits. Quantz asked for the use of the court house on the occasion of the appearance , here of Guy Miller, the Socialist. The request was denied. f Dr. Sawyer, who recently be came assciated with Dr. Brown will take Dr. Brown's work as county physcian, during the lat ter's absence this summer, Mrs. Patterson, superintendent of the county home, reported 9 white and 1 colored inmates at the home. J. F. Robinson, county bridge builder, was ordered to build a 20-foot bridge at Gheen's bridge. Allowances to out-of-door poor amounting to $56 were made. The following tax listers were elected: . The health of the community is very good. Wheat and oats are looking very good. George Shuping has put up a store. The farmers have begun to plow and prepare to plant corn. The peaches are not hurt much. Jerry Rimer, of Rimertown, visited in the neighborhood Sat urdav and Sunday. Get your bells ready for there is a wedding expected soon. Some of the neighbors are plant ing corn. There has been a petition signed up for a public road from Mrs. Bruner's crossing to E. Frank Rodgers. It will be presented to the Board of County Commission ers at the next meeting. Uncle Jack, C. R. Wilkerson, of Illinois, is visiting friends and relatives near Bostian's X Roads. There will communion and Easter services at St. Paul's on the 3rd Sunday of April. Preach ing and preparatory services will be held at 11 o'clock on Frday previous. F. K.
