Rev. VV. A. Lambeth, pastor of
the Holmes Memorial Methodist
church, has returned to his old

since he suffered from an attack
of grip last winter.

On Ascension Day there will
be an old soldiers reunion, at Lower
Stone church. R. Lee Wright,
Esq., has consented to be the
speaker on the occasion. After

Salisbury has a fine record for
the past six weeks, considering
that the population is something
over 12,000. During that period
mentioned there has been but
one death, and that was caused
from burns received, and a single
death from sickness,
Dr. Archibald Hepderson, of
the faculty of the University of
Ncrth Carolina, will deliver the
commencement address at the
graded school on May 25th.
A number of Salisbury citizens
have gone to New Orleans to at
tend the Confederate Veterans'
Reunion in that city, April 25-27.
An unusually large attendance is
anticipated.
H. E. Hodge, who has been in
theJJnited States Army for a
number of years, and stationed
recently at Fort Caswell, near
Sonthpoit, arrived in the city
Sunday. Mr. Hodge's time has
expired and he decided to recuper
ate for a few months and is now
with his father at Pool. Mr.
Hodge tells us that Grover V.
Harrison, of Salisbury, now of
Fort Caswell, is getting along
very well. Mr. Harrison has not
yet taken charge, of the fort nor
captured the high seas.
Mrs. Chas. D. Canup has sued
the Southern Railway Company
for $20,000, on account of the
death of her husband some time
in March last. Mr. Canup drove
ou the track in front of an ap
proaching train and was killed.
W. A. Hed'rick, a well known
farmer of Davidson county, while
at work on his farm some ' days
ago was suddenly stricken, blind.
Mr. Hedrick visited Salisbury at
ace b order to consult a physi
ciau, but the latter could give him
but little encouragement that his
sight would be restored.
H. S. Barger, of Woodleaf, was
in the city yesterday morning.
He brought in, a veal that was
only 7 weeks of age and obtained
$11.26 in ca8h for same It weigh-
ed 125 pouadi.
S. A. ,Huffhein, a well known
resident of Salisbury, has moved
to Spencer.
At a recent meeting of the
Board of Aldermen, the salaries
of the members of the police force
were increasd from $50 to $60 per
month, the increased salary to
begin on May 1st. The sum of
$100 was appropriated for the
rjlief of the victims of the San
Francisco disaster. W, F. Snider
was elected a member of the
school board. Mr. Snider suc
ceeds the late Dr. Rumple.
J. S. Tomlinson, who conducted
the Piedmont- Press at Hickory
some 15 or 20, years ago, now of
Washington, D. C, was a pleasant
visitor yesterday morning. He
returned to Washington on 36.
An infant son of a negro uamed
Adam Howard was badly burned
at Howards home in the West
ward. The clothing of the child
caught from an open fire.
Local officers raided a gam
bling den early Sunday morning
at Kerr and Lee streets Seven
negroes were arrested who gave
bond and were released from cus
tody. Roseman camp No. 175, Wood
men of the World, had an install
ation of officers on last Wednes
day night. Brief addresses were
made by several of the members.
The city fathers have adopted
the anti-spitting ordinance which
has proven quite popular in other
places where it has' been in force.
This ordinance provides that a
person who spits upon the floor,
sides, seats, vestibules, etc., of
the street railway cars, or upon
any sidewalk wtihin the city lim
its, Bhall be subject to a fine of
$5.00 for each offence.

was held at the First Presbyteri
an church Sunday. The follow
ing were elected officers of the
township Sunday School associa
tion : president, W1. G. Watson ;
vje-presient, C S. Minor: sec
retary, A. L. Smoot; treasurer,
W. H. Burton. The officers
named, in conjunction with Prof.
R. G. Kizer and D. W. Morris.
will constitute the executive com
mittee.
W. Thomas Bost has - returned
from a trip through the couutv.
Mr. Bost has been visiting the
farmers in the interest of the
the Cotton Growers Association.
During the session of the Fed
eral Court in Statesville last week.
W. H. Hoover and J. D. Ross, of
Salisbury, charged with distill
ing without license, were found
not guilty, and the cases against
Chas. C. Arey and R. L. Mahaley
for violation of the revenue laws,
were nol prossed by order of the
court. .
A meeting of the Salisbury bar
was held last week for the purpose
of arranging the civil docket of
the May term of court. The
docket for the term spoken of is
an unusually heavy one1.
The Southern has a large force
at work replacing the bridge eight
miles west of the city, which was
so badly damaged recently in a
wreck.

The Southeran Railway Co. is
installing an inter-locking switch
tower at Barber's Junction. The
tower will be ready for use in a
few days, and will be the only one
in this section of the State. '
The rails for the extension of
the street car line are here, and
