MUSHROOMS KILL STOW. Many Horses and Hog eat ottne nam and Tlfin Die. A curious ailment has attacked stock in this section of the State. Many horses and hogs have died from it. The wet weather has resulted in an enormous crop' of mushrooms, and the crop is per sistent, as the rains have followed each other from day to day since the early spring. Cattle and hogs are fond of mushrooms, and as the stock roams the ranges no discrimination appears to be made between the varieties that arp edi ble and those that are poisonous. t At first the farmers began to find sick bogs in their cattle yards. The sickness was generally fatal. Then horses began to be attacked by" a strange disease and several died from it. It was noticed that those which were affected had been permitted to run the range dron old pastures. Those kept in the barn escaped. Finally ex aminations of the carcass after death were made and the mush rooms eaten were found to be the cause of death. Farmers are keep ing their horses in the barn now, or on pastures that are watched carefully to see that the poison ous mushrooms are not present. The crop during the present hot, damp spell seems to be larger than ever. Southern Pines spe cial to Charlotte Observer. Trained Veterinarians Needed. : It is singular that the scientific study of disease of our domestic animals has been so neglected.. Here and there only has a man undertaken to prepare himself for the practice of the veterinarian. It is yet a fine field-for the- ambi tious man. A good veterinarian in each courity in this State would have a better fiehi than the aver age medical doctor. The igno rance and cruelty that have been practised en our dumb animals under the, guise 'of doctoring them is astonishing. It is the belief of veterinarians that stock would be far better off if let entirely alone than served as it has been the custom to serve them. .The keep er ;of a livery stable or the most ignorant horse traider has been the man supposed to know most about the disease of horses, and the average one of these is usually entirely'ignorant of the physio logy, anatomy and cause of dis eases in stock. Being ignorant not only of these things, but also of the nature and effects of drugs, these men have given, the faith ful dumb brutes a hard time. In nine cases out of ten they apply the most vigorous treatment on an entirely ' erroneous-diagonsis. And the faithful animals cannot protest. Hail to the trained veterinarian ! May he increase in the land Monroe Journal. ' " Printers not too Slow. A plan to hold tip . the British steamer Nanning, which trades between Canton and Wuchow, has been frustrated. A gang of dis guised pirates boarded the steam er at Canton, and were reinforced in nnmbes at way ports. ' Their numbers aroused suspicion and a careful watch was maintained. At the flrBt sign of restlessness the captain threatened to shftot. This prompt action led to the ar rest of three of the ringleaders, w ho were delivered to the British consul at Wuchow. There is an alarming increase of piracy in Chinese waters, and traders and ship owners fear that unless prompt measures are taktu for its suppression., the cessation of traffic 6ri West river will be in evitable.
