.'. -; DUNN'S MOUNTAIN. . September 1st, 906. We have been having plenty of rain, the ground being thoro ughly snaked; No plowing will be doie for a few days, j A man from the other side of the Yadkin river rented the farm belonging to P. A. Peeler, came over and plowed two days and then deserted--gave it up. Mr. Peeler has rented to a colored iamily, so we are informed. Mr. and Mrs, C L. Kesler have gone to visit Mr. Kesler's daugh ter near Trading Ford, whose lit tle son is quite ill. Mrs. D. M. Kesler will remain ' vri'W Vi in lof l TTca naor fit. Saturn, Saturday, the 1st, and had quite a chat with him. We hope' he will be more regular in sending in his squibs! The flag at Council No. 196 was raised on the 29th. In spite of the inclemency of the weath er, a very nice time is reported by those present. We are in formed trjit Council No. 170, Rockwell, will have an educa tional rally on September 27th. Bro. Venus, what became of thsse photos you were to make? Did ourfacos break, your nega tive? (plates,) if so adviso us, for we, Bro. P. The roughness this fall is in bad condition -throughout our neighborhood. The health of our mountain village is generally good, Hope blessing. Bartlette. Township Conientlon. Franklin, Presbyterian church and Sunday school have extended an invitation to the Sunday schools of Franklin township for the holding of a township conven tion with them Thursday, Sep tember 20, The Sunday schools of the township will doubtless be glad to improve this opportunity of coming together to discuss and plan for better methods of work. Especially since better-qualified teachers and more thorough Bibe instruction is so greatly needed. A programme of exceptional value is being prepared, made up of able speakers in the county and town ship, on the different phases of modern Sunday school work. It will be published in full next week, All Sunday school people are urgently requested to keep the day for this purpose and come with their baskets for a picnic dinner, and a feast of good things otherwise provided. A conference of the officers and teachers of the Sunday schools in Steele township was held yester day at Thyatira church. Short talks were made of organized S. S. work and the benefits of teacher training by M. Albright presi dent of Locke township Associa tion, Rev. C, B. Currie, county secretary of teacher training, and W. B. Duttera, president of the County Association. They were followed by a general discussion by Revs. T. C. Parker, W. M. Walsh and others and the unani mous sentiment was for the per manent organization in the town ship. The Steele township S. S. Association was at once formed and officers were elected as Ypl lows : President P. M. Bargei; Secretary, N. Ssott Miller; Treas urer, John Watson. The officers were directed to arrange for the holding of a township convention at such time and place as may be determined upon. Judge Paiker's Address. -: Judge Parker's address before the American Bar Association at St, Paul, Minn,, published Fri day, was a very excellent one. It is with good reason that- he cries out against the multiplication of laws the annual output of which by Congress and Legislatures he counts at 15,000 covering every phaee of human thought and con duct, when there are already on the books and have been for gene rations and centuries enough laws to meet all the requirements of the human lace. The evil is an ever present one. -It is difficult to understand how the most stu dious lawyer can keep the run of the new laws and the amend ments to the old ones, even those immediately affecting his prac tice,.while the layman cannot, of course, keep informed of those by which he is supposed to regu late his own conduct. Judge Par ker holds with him who said' 'the world is governed too much." How great a pity it is to submit an outside remark in passing that this fine New York jurist and gentleman was not eleeted presi dent iri 19041 Charlotte Observer. i Torture by Savages. "Speaking of the torture to which I some of the savage tribes in the (Philippines subject their captives, reminds me of the id tense suffering I endured for three months from inflammation of the Kidneys," says W. M. Sherman, of Cushing, Me., "nothing helped me until I tried Electric Bitters, three bottles of which cured me."
