Mr. O'Conneli's Address, James O'Connell, president of the International Order of Machinists, delivered an address Saturday night at the court house. Mr. "O'Connell is spoken of by those who heard him, as a. fluent, entertaining speaker. The Watch man is informed that his speech was quite conservative, and that he presented some sensible facts regarding the relation between capital and labor, but that like the majority of speakers on his "side of the question, he looks . at a number of things through the wrong end of the telescope. His speech, in the main, is spoken of as an intellegent presentation of his subject from the standpoint of unionism. a Re union at Gberrv Hill, Davie County. There will be a re-union and children's day at Cherry Hill, Davie county, Saturday, Sept- tember ,8th.- There will be ap propriate exercises by the child ren and speeches by the older fclks. Rev, R. Lingle, of this county, the preseut pastor, will be present and take part in the ceremonies of the day Everybody 's invited to come and Yesterday was a busy day in court, and several important cases came up. The case of Charles Brady, who has been in jail for some time, charged with a murderous assault on John Owens, was continued until the next term of court. Brady was released from custody on giving bond for $300. The trial of Gentle was set for :30 o'clock, it was the inten tion of Solicitor Hammer to try him for murder, but he decided to try him on the charge of jail breaking. L. H. Clement, Esq., assisting in the prosecution, hile Hon, Theo, F. Kluttz and . S. Carlton appear for Gentle. The jury! to try Gentle is com posed of tjhe following citizens: A. L, Hall, H. I. Hoffner, John A. Sloop, L. D. H. Brown, J. R. GufTey, W. L. Steele, A. J. Cau ble, Jas. G. Hoffner, W. M, Jam ison, J. F. Ritchie, E. W. Kerr and G. E, Moore. The first witness called by the State was H. C. Kenerly. This witness stated that he was in Salisbury on the night of August 6th ; saw the defendent that night out where the negroes were lynch ed ; only know what he told me ; Gentle came up .to me in the street as near as I can remember from the direction of the negroes. He seemed to be sober and said he reason it took them so long to get the negroes ' was because they were nut all in the same cell. Gentle said as soon as he got' to he jail old Nease.knew him. He wouldn't confess any thing till hey got him out to the ground, Nease said to him that he used to work for his daddy and he ought'nt ! to do this. Gentle asked him if he did that up yonder, he said he did, and then we swung him up. Solicitor Hammer did not want to take any chances on the recent special term of court being de clared illegal by the Supreme court, so be had the cases of Geo. Erwin, John Gillespie and Delia Dillingham presented to the graDd jury at this term. They had witnesses before them yesterday afternoon, and if thev bring I in true bills against these negroes, they will be placed on trial at the conclusion of Gentle's case.
