Mrs. D. L. Parker, of Spencer, has returned from Washington, where she had gone for surgical treatment. Dr. W. L. Crump, who has heen enjoying sea breezes at Morehead City, has returned home. The meetings held this week at ' the Luthern church in Spencer, have bf en attended by large con gregations. Excellent and earn est sermons have been preached, and it is felt that much good has . been done. Last Sunday there were appro priate Harvest Home services at the Reform church in Salisbury. W. B. Smoot and Bismarck Capps have returned to Chapel Hill to resume their law studies. Judge Council was here Sunday to consult his brother, Dr. Coun cil, as to his health. Judge Coun cil was badly shaken up in the Hamlet wreck some time ago, and he received. injuries from which it will take some time to recover. Arnold Snider, who has been confined to his home by illness for some time, is able to be 'out. A. J. Winecoff was tendered a birthday dinner on last Thursday, the occasion being the 45th an niversary of his advent into this vale of tears. THE DEATH ROLL. Funeral Services. . The remains of Lloyd Swice good, whose death in New Orleans was noted in our last issue, reach ed here last Wednesday night. The funeral was held on Thurs day morning at the Swicegood residence oh South Main street, Rev. J. C, Rowe officiating. The King of Terrors Visits Several Fami lies for More Victims. Mrs. S. J. Swicegood, who has been in j a critical condition for some time, owing to a stroke of paralysis, died at her home on South Main street Saturday night. jMrs, Swicegood was 66 years of age and had resided in this fsity all of her life. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dani el Shaver In 1862 she was mar ried to Mr. Swicegood, and her husband and six children are left to mourn her loss. The children are: Mrs. H. C. "Williams, of Charlotte, Mrs. C. H. Dudley, of South Carolina, Mrs. T. A, Coughenhour, Mrs. Claude Fred erick and Mrs. W. Ross Cox, of Salisbury, and Preston Swicegood, ot Savannah. These were with her when she died. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the First Methodist church, Rev, J. C. Rowe, officiating. Capt. Jacob A. Fisher, one of Rowan's highly esteemed citizens, died at 11;:30 yesterday morning, at his home about seven miles from Salisbury. Some days ago Capt. Fisher was taken ill with fever, and this developed into pneumonia. The deceased was well known and greatly esteemed all over the county. He was a man of strict integrity, generous and warm-hearted, and for many years a CDnsistent member of the Lutheran j church.. He served in the Confederate army and made a fine recdrd for bravery and sol dierly qualities, Capt, Fisher was in hie eightieth year but had the appearance of a much young er man. His surviving children are: Mrs, R. A. Yoder, of Lin colnton ; Mrs. I. V. Miller of Al bemarle; Mrs. F. R. L. Shaeffer, of Rowan ; Mrs. Ed. Smyre, of Newton; Messrs. John B., George A. and Lewis Fisher, The funer al will bo held this afternoon at Grace Lutheran church, and Rev. H. A. Trexler will officiate. Mrs. Hamilton C. Holt died at Spencer yesterday morning. Mrs. Holt was the wife of Conductor Holt, who has a run on the South ern. The deceased was Miss Nan nie Freeman, of Albemarle, be fore her marriage. The funeral was held at the Spencer Metho dist church this morning, Rev. J. E. Gay officiating. The infant of Mr, and Mrs. E. A. Lippert died Friday night at their residence on West Cemetery street. The remains were taken to Cincinnati for interment. Mrs. Teresa Litaker, who resided in the China Grove neighborhood, died last Tuesday. Mrs. Litaker had numerous relatives through the county. She was 84 years of age, A Painful Experience. Some days since, T. J. William son was bitten1 on the foot by a mosquito. In scratching it, the skin was broken and blood poison ing set in. The condition of Mr, Williamson was quite serious for a time. He is recovering, however, and has been able to walk out with the aid of crutches. Dr. George A. Brown Married. Dr. George A. Brown, of Mt. Ulla, a brother of Dr. J. S. Brown, well remembered here, and Miss Mamie Knox, daughter of J. W. Knox, of Cleveland, were married at the home of the bride's parents yesterday morning at 7 o'clock, Rev. Spense officiating. Dr, Brown is one of the county's best young physicians and his bride was. one of the most charmiDg young ladies of Cleveland. At a special meeting ' of the County Commissioners on Mon day, plans were adopted for a new, jail. Plans submitted by Fran P. Milburn, the architect for i Southern Railway were adopted The Commissioners will have the complete plans by the middle of October, bids will be advertised for and the work on the new structure will begin as spon as the contract is awarded. The new buildjng will cost about $18,000 and will be located in the rear of the present jail. Subscribe for the Watchman $1, Messrs. John and Robert Goit to be Li censed Ministers. The Former to Marry. John Knox Coit, son of Mrs. D. J. Coit of this city, and Miss Re becca Isabell Galloway, of Toron to, Canada, will be united in the holy bonds of matrimony, in the city of Toronto, Wednesday, Oc tober 10th. It will be a quiet home wedding, only a few of the bride's relativas and friends being present. After the ceremony the couple will come to Salisbury on a short visit and then, proceed to Rock Hill., where Mr. Coit has charge of the White Memorial mission and is energetically engag ed in the Master's cause, for which he is splendidly equipped. He has applied for and will be grant ed a minister's license by Bethel' Presbytery, of South Carolina, during its sessions this month. Mr. Coit's bride has taken a course m religious work and will be a great help to him in his du ties as pastor, as his installation will immediately follow the re ception of his license. Mr. Coit's many friends here wish him and lis bride abundant success and joy in their new relations. Robert J. Coit, brother of the ove has just finished a theologi cal4 courso in Chicago Uuiversity and will be granted minister's license here next week, during the session of Concord Presbytery. Mr. Coit is an exceptionally bright young man and can be depended upon to make a mark for himself in his chosen profession.
